Factory High Beams / HID Xenon Comparsion

I absolutely love the super bright and ultra white low beam featured on the 2015 / 2016 E Class (the standard LED headlights). The coverage and depth is excellent as well. So when i was driving through pitch black mountain terrain, i noticed that the high beams, even though light up the road very well, were halogen yellow. And this did not look too good with the pure white low beam. So i ordered a pair of xenon hid high beam bulbs that were used on the 2011-2013 w212. From the looks of it, it seems that both the halogen bulb and the hid xenon are casting the same exact length and same pattern but the xenon is much whiter. Here are some shots from 10 feet and from 75 feet. First just the LED low beam, the halogen then the HID.

Did you have to install HID ballast or did you just installed OEM Xenon bulbs?

Just a simple switch of the bulb, no ballast. They are H7 55w

I thought xenon HID's require a ballast. What's the part # of the bulb you ordered?

Interesting. I thought the facelift w212 had LED bulbs which are different from HID bulbs

I am not sure about the part number but this is what they look like, plugs directly into the high beam socket. It is a 55w bulb size H7.

The low beam is latest technology in LEDs however the high beam is a halogen.

LED only in the DRL when vehicle does not have the lighting package. Vehicles with lighting package has the "double arrow" full LED intelligent lighting.

That looks like a standard halogen H7 bulb coated with blue tint to make it look whiter.

I believe Xenon HID bulbs for H7 are 35 watts and the internals look different from what you have in the picture.

Do you have the amazon link for that bulb?

Those are not HID's. they are just Halogen's with blue paint to make the light appear whiter.

You're right. That's a standard halogen bulb. HID will need ballast and igniter to function. There are a lot of halogen bulbs with blue coating that are advertised as HID, but aren't. The blue coating will peel and deteriorate over time. The coating also reduces lumens. There's no physical way for a halogen to reach the high temps true HIDs can achieve.

Thats cool. I did come across these LEDs after doing research on new technology LED headlights that are featured on the 2015 - 2016 E Class low beams. These are the types of bulbs that are used on my vehicle to emit that bright pure white light. I think i can use this for the high beam as well.

That is not correct, the low beam and DRL are an integrated unit and both are LEDs, even on vehicles without the lighting package.

I don't know much, but I do know that this subject has been beaten to death in these forums.

Head lamps can be filled with Xenon gas (instead of Halogen) and apparently give off a "whiter" light. They are not HID. Whether they actually help with visibility is the subject of endless debate. If OP is happy, then all is good.

Wow, they are LED. They look like regular standard halogens without the projection.

Definetly not halogen, as you can see the factory low beam is about as white as it gets, and the distance and coverage is amazing. It covers the entire highway. The vehicle with halogens in front of me and mine with the LEDs.

As far as I know, Mercedes do not use LED bulbs for their low beam headlights, but those LED bulbs might be a better choice than the blue tint halogen bulbs you have in there for high beams.

The low beam is full LED, you can easily see the LED chip if you look inside the headlight housing. I took out the xenon gas high beams and put the LEDs yesterday, and WOW! It is the brightest and whitest light i have ever seen on a car. I am amazed. And i highly recommend those LED bulbs for anyone that wants to get more light coverage and depth from their high beams.
