Box on top of battery
For first time I took the top off the battery. Apparently it is an air intake box. Is it for the ventilation system?
Why would MB have it above the battery?
When I went to remove it, the clips on either side in back were not hooked on. They set a little higher than the clip posts on the box. Only the middle one was hooked.
Dealer supposedly took it off last year to test it.
When I reinstalled it, made sure all three clips hooked on, but this seemed to make it sit slightly above the battery.
Is this where it is supposed to sit?
MB's sure are complicated. My Toyota's battery is open and clearly labeled as to size, CCA and RC. MB only has the MB logo and part no..
Thanks,

Yes, it is where cabin air enters, and it does sit above the battery as you indicated. The 3 retaining clips are definitely odd. Be careful not to lose the center one which is a metal clip engaged into a plastic post if I remember correctly. It's like a hat on top of the battery, but should take a total of 5 seconds to remove.

I remember the first time putting it back on - had a hard time getting it to sit correctly. If you look on the underside you will see a couple plastic tabs that need to line up with the corresponding notches under the seals around both air openings. When you have it right the cowl/box can almost sit in place due to the tabs and the tension in the seals. Then clamping down the clips just pulls it in tighter. Thanks to all my past AC smell and battery issues, I can do it in my sleep now.

big box
This big air box prevents too much water from entering into HVAC vent.
Make sure it is sitted properly with its bottom hooked secured into car before closing 3 top latches.
It takes a little practice to getting it dropped in centered well.
Take your time.

It makes sense now
My concern is that in Canadian winter it blow/circulate cold air to battery which can drain battery when sitting there.
I remember chrysler use to put bubble jackets to battery which in my observation helps in cold weather.
Thanks And Happy Holidays 😀
