Car jumped out of reverse

Strange thing. I had the car in reverse to back out of a parking lot (rolling downhill). All of a sudden after going about 10 feet, I heard a clicking noise and it popped out of reverse and went into neutral. I,then, reengaged reverse and it was OK.

should I consider this a normal behavior? I never had an auto tranny do this to me.

Haven't had that happen myself. Any chance you tapped the stick?

Did you get any alarms in the dash display? I've gotten the danger of roll away display before, and I think it went to neutral, too. I was in the garage, with the car in reverse, but something distracted me and I delayed in backing out. It's happened only once.

Point is I think the car will shift into neutral and throw the warning if it thinks there is danger of uncontrolled rolling.

Switching to neutral to prevent unintended rolling seems like the wrong thing to do, especially on a slope. This is odd as hell.

2014 E350 also restored: 1969 Camaro convertible SS 1957 Chevy Belair 2dr hardtop
Had a Chevy in 1978 and it always popped into neutral. Chevy dealer I bought from said it was normal. brought to another dealer and they said a switch was bad. They replaced the switch and it never happened again. I also never went back to the first dealership for anything. If it pops into neutral something is definitely wrong.

what worries me is the loud clicking sound that preceded the shifting into neutral. it seems as though the selector was stuck somewhere. time to visit the dealer........

Well, I actually park in my 2-car garage rather than use it for storage. Pulling in/out takes some getting used to, with all the parktronic bells and lights going off, and the ECON Auto-Off threatening to trigger if I drive too slowly, while aiming at a wiffle ball target dangling from the ceiling. So, it's always an adventure, and I hope I remembered this added wrinkle throuwn in correctly.

While in reverse, my rear wheels had just dropped off the 1" step from the flat garage floor onto the driveway, so the rear of the car was marginally lower (sensed as rolling down hill?). I stopped briefly to inspect my mirrors to see that I would clear a car parked to the side in the driveway behind me. I took my foot off the brake and I then got the RED warning in the MFD on the danger of a possible roll away. I think the tranny was now in Neutral -- which triggered the warning message -- but frankly am not sure. I do remember applying the brakes again, double checking my transmission position and selecting R again, just to be sure. The warning cleared and I then proceeded...

2014 E550-sold 😩
Never had that happen. If the door is open the car will throw itself into park with a big red display warning. That's always fun.

I found this out the hard (dumb) way. I had a newspaper on the driveway, so as I pulled up I was going to ease up to it, pop the door open and lean down to get it. As soon as I opened the door (car doing a 1-2mph roll) the car went into park lol. Wacked my dumb noggin on the a-pillar too.
