did I get a good deal on 60K mile service
I did the 60K service with some extras thrown in:
- oil and filter change
- engine air filter change
- brake fluid replacement
- DEF fill up
- cabin (a/c) filter replacement
- accessory battery in the trunk replacement
at an indy mechanic for $580 including car rental. at the dealer they quoted me aprox. $600 not including DEF fill up and not including accessory battery replacement. However my indy guy doesn't do any "checks" unless I tell him to take a look a specific area.

do w212 cars tell you (on the info display) when our battery is low (either the main battery or the accessory battery). I ask because my mechanic tells me that they just go south one day - especially for the accessory battery. no warnings.... is this true???

I don't know too many cars that warn of a low battery condition, but I can usually tell when they are going out and then I will test them to confirm. I know that there is a warning for the auxiliary battery in these cars. I'm sure there are reasons for that warning, but not sure why.

Depends on if you're capable of doing these things yourself. I bought OEM filter and Mobil 1 oil for about $80 total cost of oil change. The air filters are maybe $20-25 each, don't know what DEF is required or what it costs, and the battery is probably less than $100, just guessing. Brake fluid is really cheap, but not the simplest job, not really necessary to change at 60K. Other than the brake fluid, these all seem like jobs that would take maybe an hour in total if you have some basic mechanical skills. Dealer is probably charging $300 in inflated parts cost and 2 hours @ $150/hr sounds right, so total of $600.
