W212 is having trouble shifting, has anyone also have this problem before?

Just last week, I would try to get out of assigned outdoor parking and whenever I had to put it into reverse or drive to maneuver out of the parking spot it would shift back into park. This would either be when the car is stopped or it would slam itself into park.

Luckly, I have a 3rd party warranty through AUL. The caveat though was that when I sent it to the Mercedes Dealership, AUL and the service manager argued on whether to use AUL's aftermarket part as opposed to the Dealership's. Anyways, they determined the steering column was very bad and replaced it.

Even as they replaced it, the problem still occurs! When talking to the service manager, he said it could be the differential and was very surprised that the problem persisted.

My question is that since my car is a 4 matic, and I hear the transmission is bad on these vehicles; is Mercedes avoiding looking into the transmission since it would be a lot of work with AUL and on their part? Has anyone experienced the same events?

Some elements that I think may have affected this was either a spark plug change, the fact I have my dash cam hardwired to the back fuse box( I think 37 and 68?) or the fact that this car had water up to the door handle(briefly, for 5 minutes during a flash flood). Please I need your help!

I wonder if the car thinks that your door is open.

That's what they thought, but the diagnostic didn't show that when it went to the dealership

It's your ignition switch!!! It would have been fixed if it was at my shop. This is a known issue.

If your VIN is below A776831 check ignition switch as suggested, see attached bulletin.

Would you simply install a new ignition switch and not worry about reauthorizing the existing keys and would they just marry up to the new switch on their own? Or is this strictly a dealer level repair with online programming capabilities, could I do it with access to SDS only? If this turns out to be a "dealership only" fix, what is a ball park estimate to replace the EZS?

I have had the "Key Not Detected" warning twice in the last couple of weeks and my serial number A600278 falls before the cutoff A776831 so I have some concerns. I have keyless Go so the key was not in the ignition switch when the message popped up.

Thanks, Bob

Wow! You guys knew what the most popular MB dealership in Utah took two tries to figure out. It ended up being the ignition switch! Anyway it'd may be easier to say that they should program my spare key as well?! =)

I'll hva not figure out my vin number tomorrow, if I remember. But Wow! Thank you!!

Lots of intelligent and helpful folk here which makes owning these cars pleasurable if I may say so.

Hi guys,

I experienced this same issue yesterday (for the 1st time). I was pulling out of my parking spot in drive, as I was cutting the wheel to get out, I noticed I wasn't going forward anymore. The car shifted into park by itself. It was really odd as no warning lights or alerts came on. I'm going to try to reproduce the issue today because it was so bizarre I didn't believe it happened until I read this post.

My car is a 2014 W212 E550 4Matic (44k miles) with a CPO warranty. If I can reproduce the issue, I'm going to take it into the dealership. I've also encountered rough shifts with my 7 speed transmission and they reset the adaptations.

Thoughts?

If bulletin does not apply next place to consider checking is ISM for software update and/or reactivation using MB Xentry (diagnostics), worst case scenario may need replacement.

Hi Konigstiger,

Sorry, I'm relatively new to the forum here. Can you explain those steps a little further and when they mean?

Appreciate it,
-D.

If your VIN is not within range of bulletin I posted previously request dealer pull fault codes, no codes they should check Intelligent Servo module control unit (ISM, 10 in diagram) using MB diagnostics (Xentry) to relearn unit and apply software update if available.
