To start with, your car is a very old car with the older NTG4 head unit (without a need for a license key) which we don't even have map updates for that car since it's so old and yes you can get used map updates for that car and share them around with you friends should you wish so. The map updates we provide are all licensed map updates for 2012+ models which do require a license key and once a license key is registered to that VIN number it cannot be used on a different car. Same license used at any MB dealership at a lower overhead cost. It's no different than doing a brake job at the dealer for $1k+ or to have a taken to a qualified shop using OEM parts for $700.

I have attached a picture of the "End User Agreement" that came with my NAVI update disk. Everyone can read and make his/her mind how legal it is to "toss" these disks around to other people. I understand it that it is NOT legal and you can transfer just the one copy of it you have. This allowed transfer I believe is in place so that when you sell or trade in your car you do not get in trouble transferring the NAVI data but by this agreement you could get in trouble legally if you don't have your NAVI data disks in the car when you let your car go.

What comes to your business of selling the updates I'm happy to see that MB put the VIN in it now but for me it was not obvious that you would be an authorized MB NAVI update sales rep or dealer. Your post was written just like I have seen in the past when people circle data illegally. My apologies for misunderstanding your post.

I use a Garmin for around $100. It comes with lifetime map upgrades and lifetime traffic. No need for fancy radio. My wife's C300 has MBZ navigation and the Garmin is supperior, but it sticks to the windshield instead of being in the dash. MBZ can do better and cheaper.

So much for Lifetime Updates!

Hope this doesn't happen to your Garmin. For TomTom Lifetime Updates doesn't mean lifetime. When I try to update my 2010 GPS unit it now says:

"Due to the age of your device and the limitation of the internal memory, it is not longer possible to update it with new software or buy maps and services."

"If you would like to consider replace your GPS device, simply confirm you details below to claim your exclusive offer, today"

So they send me an email for a 20% off discount bringing the retail price of $199 to $159. Gee thanks but no thanks!

Yeah same thing happened to me. Very Old technology on most devices can’t be updated with newer software because at some point it just isn’t compatible anymore.

That's still a pretty good deal, when you think about it. I think my Garmin with lifetime maps and traffic was around $120, not sure really. Maybe it's because I've gotten used to it, but I prefer my stick-on-windshield Garmin to my wife's MBZ navigation, which is quite close really. Maybe I just like my Garmin lady's voice. I trust her explicitly. Unit is around two years old. I'll buy another one if it becomes outdated. I only used navigation maybe once a month.

Hey, what do you want for ten years later? Upgrading hardware after that long is part of the deal. Think of a 10 year old computer. Works but not that good. New Dell on the Horizon.
