Replace Front Wheel Bearings/Races

I'm looking to replace the front inner and outer wheel bearings and races on E550 Base. Rather than spend $300 per hub assembly from Mercedes that comes with bearings and seal, I decided to order just the bearings from a dealership via Amazon. Package cam promptly, but discovered the bearings are not the same size, therefore do not fit hub. Has anyone had good luck replacing bearings, and if so, where did you find the bearings? Apparently, dealers can only sell the hub assembly, and I've no luck finding bearings online through sites such as AutohausAZ. My local NAPA has them (at least so they say), but I'm leery of getting parts from NAPA, Autozone, etc. I also noted when I took the bearings and races out, outer race was made in Japan and inner was made in India. Vehicle has 95k miles, I'm the 2nd owner, so I'm wondering if the bearings have been replaced before.

Mine is a base, not a 4Matic. I looked at the site and they only sell the hub assembly for the base for $184, which is much better than $330 the dealer wants. I think I will go the hub replacement route rather than bearing, since bearings are impossible to find. But my question now is there a difference in hub size between a 550 base and a coupe/conv? The previous 2 sets of bearings I've ordered were smaller diameter than what's on there. And does it matter if the base is sport package or not? Even the parts houses can't really answer these questions, so I guess it's trial and error on ordering/returning parts.

Thanks for your reply!!

I think trial and error and the worst thing to do. FCP Euro's website asks for your exact car. You can also call them if youre not sure. You also call the dealership for the exact part number by your VIN. There also many websites that you can lookup parts numbers. Here is one https://parts.mbfm.com/.

I personally order everything your FCPEuro since they have lifetime warranty on pretty much everything. So if your bearings "ever" go bad again, they will replace it

ordered the hub assembly and inner bearing is too small and will not fit onto spindle. I also ordered hub assembly from RockAuto (Moog) but it also was too small. This just does not make sense to me!! I'll keep searching, and I appreciate all the feedback. Will let you know when and where I find correct parts!!

Could it be that the parts you need are AMG parts and the parts you have been receiving are for E350. I think at less brakes on E550 are same size as on AMG models.

The brake parts on the E550 are not the same as on the E63. Ordering AMG parts are most likely going to have you in the same situation. As stated above , there are many ways to verify the correct parts for any car. Make sure youre specifying the correct car and/or your VIN.

I think perhaps since it is a sport model, it does have the E63 sized spindles on it. Found Timken bearings/races at an industrial bearing supply company locally, luckily. Who knew an industrial bearing company would have the bearings. Inner was Timken 32008XM, which was the more difficult one to find.

New problem now is after I changed out bearings, races and seals, now the ABS/ESC Inoperative light is on, so I'm trying to figure what the deal is with that!!
