Bumper to Bumper warranty programs
We bought a 2011 E550 4-Matic in October 2018 and we are really enjoying the car. My Wife now prefers riding in it - rather than the SL 500. Lots of Power! A comfortablr & good-looking car.
If you are considering buying a W212 … look into buying a good Bumper to Bumper warranty program. We did and ours has paid off (broken even) already.
Make sure the warranty company has a good reputation. A company that your Mechanic can endorse.
Go for the highest coverage. Since (as my mechanic explained) apparently the warranty company makes their money on people who take the least expensive “drive train” warranty- … and drive trains almost never break down.
The warranty company spend money to keep the Platinum Bumper to Bumper buyers happy ... since that is their advertising for selling “drive train” warranty policies (where they make their money).
As noted above, we purchased our 2011 E550 in Oct 2018 ... and the dealership had a special on the Old Republic Canada warranty.
Our independent mechanic said Old Republic are a good company. We got a good discount. So we went for the premium bumper to bumper coverage.
The coverage we bought was;
5 Years, 40,000 Km (25,000 miles) Platinum, Bumper to Bumper.
Cost $ 3,500 Cdn. The dealership had a 20% off promotion at the time ... so $ 4,400 Cdn ( $ 3,300 USD) may be close to their regular price. $ 300 Cdn ($ 220 USD) Deducible.
I thought it was pretty good insurance for a car that is high tech and I thought would be expensive to fix.
Since Oct 2018 we have had;
- the generator motor fail = $ 1,500 Cdn to replace
- the rear Air Springs and valves replaced = $ 2,500 Cdn to replace
Both cost me the $ 300 deductible. Plus, I got a C Class car rental for a few days included.
I am very happy to have broken even so soon.
I have seen other members post of even better plan cost, coverage terms and work done.
I was surprised they covered air springs that were leaking … because the car was technically still drive-able.

wow that seems quite early for things to start going.. service records show it well maintained? I've read that the 4matic suspension has more issues down the line with heavy mileage but I'm new here
Edit: found it for you and it seems it was the all e550s not just the 4matics my bad : https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...eak-nhtsa.html

Turns out to be something in the steering column not sending the right signal to the transmission ... the agreed fix (OKed by Old Republic) is $ 2,056 cost less deductible .
Feeling good about buying that extended bumper to bumper warranty!
The cost of the 5 Years, 40,000 Km (25,000 miles) Platinum, Bumper to Bumper.
Cost $ 3,500 CDN.
After 16 months into a 5 year program ... after 15,000 Km into a 40,000 Km program ... $ 5,100 (after deductible) cost to the insurance company.
Cost of insurance to me $ 3,500.

We have the later version 550 and spent $2800 on a 5 year $50 deductible (per visit, not per issue) warranty. Warranty company is out around $10K right now and we have a year left. Dealership is who has really shined - last trip in (over holidays) car was there for 32 days, and we had a 2020 GLC the whole time, plus they threw in a Service A. Relationship with a good dealer is right up there with having a good warranty.
