14-16 E350 shift knob swap

Hello everyone! Does anyone know if it’s possible to remove the old shift knob (it’s the one that looks like a turn signal near the steering wheel on the right side) and to install the E63 center console shifter? I have all the parts including the center console and buttons but am worried that it’ll require programming or worse. Or would the new shifter just take over the old shifters commands (ie. Drive, reverse, etc).

Thank you all all in advance!

I hope you figure this out, that would be a neat mod.

Nope, could not figure it out. I guess either no one knows or people are too afraid to say or give false info.

How much did you already spend on the console parts?

Did you use a donor VIN to find the parts? I think you will need this to be sure you have all the necessary parts.

To whit... I don't know for certain, but suspect you will need to replace the steering column, too (change to the E63 kind). New steering wheel, too?

I suspect people are not responding because they think it will be WAY TOO EXPENSIVE to even think about it.

I wish my car had a conventional shifter - like the W204 - but I can't imagine the cost involved in this change.

Talk about wide ties coming into and going out of style... The cars I grew up with all had column shifters, including many manuals. Then the style became console shifting. That took some adjustment for me.

Now that I'm well trained on console shifters, they go back to column shifters. A few brands have even reinstated "button" shifters (on the dash) that went out of style in the 50's.

It took a few months for me to grow reacquainted with at column shifter, giggling each time I reach for the console to put my W212 in Drive. Now that I am readjusted, I like column shifter right where it is, and the comand control wheel falls right to hand, in the console..

I prefer the column shifter and opening up space in the center console.

The console shifter is just moving a set of electrical contacts (switches) , not like it is connected to the transmission with levers.Once you get used to it being on the column it makes more sense. Frees up lots wasted space. Buttons on the dash make just as much sense, Chrysler did it in the 1960's
On a manual the number of levers and connections was greatly reduced by putting the stick on top of the trans and through the floor rather than on the column.

For all of you saying that this frees up space... yes, it does. Or it would? I do not personally see a space advantage in the W212 standard model over the W212 AMG models. The armrest is a different shape. The cupholders are oriented differently. But there is no extra space, therefore I don't see the point in this particular application. There is no extra usable space in the W212 in the console area where a traditional shifter would be than there was in my W204.

Now I just got out of a loaner GLC I had for a week and an E450 wagon I had for three days. In those cars, they have much more space in that area and for them it makes sense.

This is gorgeous to me (and I prefer the cupholders this way):

Yes, that is present.. a cigarette lighter and ashtray that are completely useless. I store chapstick and the engine start/stop button in the ashtray (that I've lined with felt). But even if they removed those things, that area of storage would not be big enough for a phone. My point was that they have utilized the free space so poorly in the regular W212 that the column shifter makes no real sense IF it is for that reason. They obviously did it for other reasons.

My W211 had the console shifter and it does take up room. I put my phone in the cup holder which is perfectly placed. I just enjoy the open landscape without that stick in that area. It’s a silly argument in any case.

I honestly just wanted it for the looks. There is plenty of storage and space inside the W212 (Side doors, center console, etc). I was just wondering what would it take to convert from tradition steering wheel column shifter to the middle AMG one.

I have ALL the parts needed. I was just looking for a step for step maybe or some guidance. And it all cost me $250 to who ever asked me above. the car was totaled and my buddy sold it to me for individual parts.
