It was the wife!
Hi, so after not allowing the car to do a regen over a couple of years, my lovely Missus has managed to knock the bottom of the engine out of her 2012 E350 Blue Efficiency Sport convertible and after just spending £1500 on brakes, service and new oil cooler I'm now in need of an engine. Trouble is, I don't fancy entrusting it to an engine replacement centre, having the car with them and then receiving calls that the price is no longer "x" but is now "y" and having no choice but to pay. I just want to leave the car with my mechanic and have an engine delivered to his place. The cats and dpf are all sorted, I just need an engine that isn't going to rattle, smoke etc once fitted. I'm in the UK so if anyone can reccommend a firm then I'd be grateful, Thanks.

A wife can be expensive. Bad news is that she's more expensive as an ex-wife.

For DFW: Not too sure if you're being ironic but I'm willing to bite A regen is a regeeration cycle where soot deposits that the diesel particle filter has captured are burnt off. A part of this cycle is that fuel is injected into the dpf but if the regen cycle is interrupted then that unused fuel just gets dumped into the sump. For a regen cycle to complete the engine must be at a certain temperature, be running at 3000rpm for about 30 minutes and to start a regen the tank must be at least quarter full (I believe, might be half full) but my missus insists on running the car around on empty for some reason. If the DPF is blocked it causes extra pressure on the engine but especially the turbo.
To knock the bottom out of an engine means to damage the bottom of the engine, crank, big ends etc.
Cats are catalytic converters. A DPF is a diesel particle filter.

Johny, thanks. I've heard good things about them too. They have quoted me, not the cheapest by a long shot but that's okay as I'd rather have good than cheap. They need about 4 grand but it is what it is and it looks like a pill I'm gonna have to swallow.

I had a 2012 E350 Cabriolet with the Blue Efficiency logo. It was not a diesel. The Blue Efficiency badge just indicated that it was a fuel efficient engine. I also had a 2012 C250 Sport Sedan with the same badge. As far as I know only the 2012’s have had this....

That topic would go quite different direction if posted in diesel section.
But the main issue is that this forum has only few UK members, so don't expect too much.
I see several errors in understanding how regeneration works and blue efficiency MB diesels on US market are called Bluetec, but this is side observation.
The only thing I can advise is considering new MB engine. Rebuilds are always high risk, so unless you buy them for 1/4 what new engine cost, such choice might not be best economically.
