B9 service

My car is due for service and it shows B9 service due. I know what B means but what is included in “9”?
I’m out of warranty on my 2014 model (35 k miles). Would I be better off buying the three pack service (if it still exists) or do it “a’ la carte”? Thanks

Depends on what they say is due. If it includes spark plugs or a transmission flush, then the service pack is worth it. As mentioned elsewhere, MB is still doing their $150 off $300, but it's targeted, no website for it. Just check your MB emails for it or call corporate and ask about it.

9 just indicates that its the 9th time the B service will be performed.

I see, you mean the 9th service done for the car including A and B. That makes sense. Thanks.

Are you sure about that? a 2014 with 35k miles should not have had 9 services total done. Nevermind 9 B services (meaning 18 total services).

I had my 2013 serviced this past spring for B9 and it was the 6th time it went in for service since new. (I had 36k miles on it at the time).

Using the standard 1 year or 10k mile between services, the 9th B service would mean it has gone through 9 A services as well, which means it'll be the 18th service. If we go by time, that would mean it has been 18 years. if we go by miles that means 180k miles.
The OP says the car is a 2014 so it hasn't been 18 years yet, and the OP said it's got 35k miles so it hasn't hit 180k miles yet. So therefor B9 can't mean 9th B service.

My 2013 E350 had it's B9 service done this past March. They replaced Oil/Filter, Brake Fluid, Spark Plugs, Air filters, and wiper blades.
It had 36k miles on it at the time, so very similar to you car.

BTW if you don't have a pre-paid maintenance package, I recommend getting one before you get the service done. It'll almost pay for itself with 1 service.
I paid $1400 for a 3 pack of pre-paid maintance. This one service was over $1200. Next service will include a transmission flush which is also a pricy one.

My A9 service is in the 20 day countdown. I have 58,000 miles and it’s a 2014. So what are you all saying?

You can check with the vendors mentioned in the extended warranty subforum. There's not much of a discount on them, but some dealers mark up the price from list so it depends what the dealer quotes you.

I always buy my extended warranty and pre-paid maintenance packages from Jeff Jackson @ MB of Louisville (Tafel motors).
The last 3 pack I got for my E350 was $1400.

Yes, but it's 60k or 6 years. For a 2013, it was probably at 6 years. There's discussion in the past how you don't want to wait too long as they might get rusted in if you wait til you hit 60k.

This is from the interactive owners manual: The letter indicates which service is due. A stands for a minor service and B for a major service. A number or another letter may be displayed after the letter. This figure indicates any necessary additional maintenance work to be performed.

That is for the Assyst system, the web page is found here http://www4.mercedes-benz.com/manual...&part=in-depth

I just purchased a new to me E250 and I currently own a E320 CDI. The service systems are a bit different, but on the 320 there is a maintenance manual page that describe additional items. So on that car you will service A, B, C, D, or E and then addtional work items in the FSS menu with numbers next to them. You then go to the manual and that page tells you what each item is. So, I can't tell you what the 9 is, but looks like you have service B due, with an additional item number 9 due at the same time.

Hi All,

From the user manual Maintenance Assyst Plus (page 327):

The letter indicates which service is due - "A" minor service, "B" major service.

The number (or another letter) indicates any additional maintenance work required.

From memory I might have had B3 for the transmission service.

Plugs every 6 years or 60k miles. I was at the 6 year mark, so dealer replaced the plugs (covered under pre-paid maintenance program).
Next march will be 7 years and I'll likely be around 40k to 41k miles, they will do the transmission fluid flush which is every 7 years or 70k miles. again covered under pre-paid maintenance.

Lots of talk about car maintenance but when you think about it, it is quite simple.

While the car is under warranty you better take it to the dealer for all scheduled maintenance. This is including the extended warranty period. Yes, if you do your own oil changes etc. with all documentations you should be fine but if something goes wrong it is better if the dealer service did all of it.

But, after warranty you do not need to take it to the dealer nor do you need to document the service other than to yourself.

My recommendation is to change engine oil every 5000 miles if you plan to keep your car. I did this between dealer oil services at every 10000 miles anyway.

My car has over 170000 miles on it and I have not flushed engine cooling system yet nor have I flushed the brake fluid either. Reason is I drive 85% highway and my engine life is only about 1/3 of the city driving mileage. I am getting to flushing them both soon though.

I wouldn't have waited that that long to flush the brake fluid. It absorbs water from the air and that comes from repeated application of the brakes and the heating/cooling cycle. Water in the system will just mean your brake parts like calipers will rust out sooner.
