The main logic is comfort.
When you start on 1st with powerful engine, you'll be doing lot of tire burning. I had that a lot in SL500
That is why smaller engines can use it, when more powerful better start on 2nd.
I was never impress with MB programmers. For some reasons they program hill holding on some models working only in C (W) mode. Why would you start up steep hill on 2nd ?
