I wasn’t planning on buying this car to be honest as I was just killing time looking on Autotrader since I wanted one of these and almost bought one a couple years ago.

My initial plan was to buy a 2019 E450 sport package with Premium package and Pano roof sometime in 2020.

that said, with the low mileage and condition, getting the V8TT seemed too good to pass up. pano roof is a big plus. And that power train...love the engine! My current E doesn’t have the fancy gadgets and it doesn’t bother me. It’s still mint and drives well and I still love the look. Just the power is so low.

My other car is a fully loaded 2020 GLE with every option, step rails, AMG rims and package, etc... this is my daily that I commute with and thought buying a 27K (34 after taxes, fees, and CPO) was too good a deal to pass up and quite literally the lowest I’ve spend on a car in 17 years. Felt proud of myself for being financially smart for once in my life.

so should I pass and stick to plan A and wait until 2021 for a CPO E450....or should I try to knock a bit more off this price?

last question, is the basic lighting package really that bad?
Personally I quite like the W212 and think you should just look for another E550 preferably 2016 as it has Apple Carplay Capability to be added. What i think you should do is just look for another E550. doneee

The basic lighting package is what i’d say makes a mercedes look cheap. the intelligent light system makes a mercedes a mercedes, it changes the entire look of the car.

my understanding was that the e550 was discontinued after 2014 and became an e400. I wish I could find pics of the stock lighting and the intelligent lighting to see a comparison.

Here’s a close up pic of the lights. I’m confused and may be reading things wrong but what differentiates the two types of lights. If it’s the borders of each set of bulbs, doesn’t this seem to have it??

The facelift 2014 E550 4M is a one year model in the US. It did carry over to Canada for 2015, then it was done. The TTV8 is a 430HP beast and I just love this package. I have no clue how this car got ordered with no driver assist. The lighting package is an expensive option and I could see foregoing that. No driver assist or keyless go is a deal breaker for me.
But! It’s your call, not ours. You will never be disappointed with the performance. It goes like stink and will return 27-30 mpg on the highway.
If you buy it let us know and good luck!

The full LED lighting package also self levels and will move with steering inputs while cornering. Your other MB’s May have it

Thanks guys. Just wondering if more low mileage ones like these will be around if I pass this up. The CPO piece is what’s really compelling me. I’m wondering how much I’ll miss the missing options.

Maybe I’ll try to get some more money off. I got them down 2400 from their original asking price of 29888. I’m adding the extended CPO for just over 3K.

I compliment your negotiation on this, but the lack of important options probably has it sitting on the lot. You know the brand and you will not find another low mile 550 like this again. Once again, a very rare car. If you can live with the stripped down version and they will knock some more off then go for it. CPO coverage is good, but things like struts, etc are not covered. You are also at the age where you should probably do the trans service. Plugs if you are up for it as well. I know these are 50K and 60K services, but they are due by age.
Im always nervous buying low mile older cars, especially MB. The cars do not like to sit for any extended length of time. Being CPO will help with some peace of mind.

Robxc80 - don't know what part of the country you're in or if it is still available, but part of me still regrets not getting this:

2014 E550
I picked mine up a few months ago for 28k and had it shipped to me. Has everything but keyless go (bummer) and distronic, and had 20k miles. I was looking for a 14 E550 4Matic with every option I could get that had an engine date code without the timing chain issue. I wanted the biturbo, coulda saved a ton on a 350.

Finding one of these with low miles (sub 30k) that hasn’t been wrecked, isn’t from a salt ridden northern state, isn’t easy (depending how long you’re willing to wait) don’t care what anyone says.

can you expand a bit more in the timing chain issue?

i truly appreciate all the help. I’m thinking I’ll be ok without those extras hit do with it had the lighting package and the keyless go. I’m sure I’ll get over it quickly once I mash that pedal.

thank you. That one is indeed clean and I’m in CA. I messaged him.

Still think that CPO deal is more reassuring than private party however.

It’s on here somewhere as well but couldn’t find it quickly. Engines within a certain serial number range are prone to timing chain issues, probably not a big concern on a CPO vehicle though.

FYI the LED lighting package is one of the best features of this car, other than the biturbo beast.

After owning three 6 cylinder E class Sedans 1994, 2007, & 2014. I finally let my emotions override my logic, and got a 2013 E550. Many smiles per gallon, and as others have posted "it goes like stink". I would get a VMI from the dealer showing the vehicles history. Especially the cars in service date. A dealer has to CPO the car within the 4 year warranty period. 6 year maintenance calls for spark plug replacement (not inexpensive) 3.6 hours labor. The timing chain issues were faulty check valves, and tensioners/guides depending on engine production date. Xentry service bulletins were issued for this. Good Luck.

I believe he already sold this one. I think he was moving b/c of his job and had to sell quick.

thank you. Regarding what you mentioned about the dealer having to CPO the car within the four year period...should I be concerned that he is pulling my leg. He mentioned due to mileage he can do an extended CPO with zero deductible. Should I also ask him to replace the spark plugs?

Tell him to email you the CPO paperwork and see what he sends. Yes, CPO is written prior to expiration of the 4 year original warranty. I just had plugs changed 2 weeks ago. I’ll look for the charge. I had a lot done at that service so I didn’t look at the break down.

looks like I was charged $420 or so and all things considered this was cheaper than my 2004 W211 E 500. That was a twin plug motor but still.

thank you. He said the car is going through the process and that he will email me once completed. I will be sure to update afterwards.

ive decided I could live with the stripped down options. Now I just have to see if I can squeeze more off the car.

The interior looks clean. The trim is in good shape. I know how bad it can look since mine in my current e350 is faded.

what can be done to prevent the fading? Mine is not garage kept unfortunately.

Clean trim

Hi Rob,

I just picked up a 2014 E550 4-matic with 48k miles in December. It's a stripped down model like yours, just the P01 package and LED headlights. Coming from a highly optioned 2007 E550 (P01, P02, trunk closer, fold downs, etc), the new car seems a "lesser" car. Knowing what I know now, I'm happy 90% and bummed 10% (like when i realized there are no fold downs and now I have to spend $500 for a ski rack). But, the bi-turbo is more fun to drive!

These are just my thoughts. Do what's best for you. The car is a kick in the pants, it's just accepting a happy/bummed ratio you can live with.

That is my exact exterior and interior livery right down to the dark burl wood and wood/leather steering wheel. I have no fading, so don’t concern yourself.

thanks for sharing your thoughts. I just got out of my gle and it bothers me that this e550 doesn’t have the keyless go...that’ll bother me a lot. I speak to the sales rep later today. I’m going to see how much more room I have on this car. Might be worth just holding onto my e350 another year and get back into the market next year for newer cars with more tech and features. But I know I’ll always look back at this V8TT as the one that got away.
