The cup holder for the rear facing 3rd seat in my 2013 won’t longer close all the way when attempting to insert it back into the seat. When attempting to push in the cup holder to its home position, it won’t latch and ultimately pops back out. This is literally the 2nd time we’ve used the rear facing seat in the 6 years we’ve had the vehicle. Has anyone else ran across this issue or have any recommendations to fix it? Please see pictures for reference. The 2nd photo shows the final position of the cup holder once arranging to insert in back into the seat and after it pops back out on its own.
Remove the rear storage cover/third row lower cushion from vehicle (rotate till vertical and pull up)
Lower cushion is attached via clips around its perimeter (get your fingers under the cushion and pull up, work your way around) to the storage cover
Cup holder assembly will be visible once cushion is removed, remove 4 torx screws attaching it to storage cover
Remove the trapezoidal cover at the back of the cup holder assembly (two tangs on the underside squeezed and pushed up
At this point you should see what the issue is. If the broken catch is still inside, it might be possible to re-glue. If not, a new assembly is $70 from MB. Some pics from my thread about it: https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...attention.html

The ABS glue didn't work out... pulled up the storage hatch and the cup holder slid out. I haven't taken it apart, but I suspect the glue failed. Maybe cyanoacrylate, CA, aka super glue would have been better, though ABS glue melts and bonds ABS. The spring in the mechanism is surprisingly stiff (puts a fair amount of pressure on catch) and the piece that broke is very small and thus offers minimal surface area for glue to bond with.
It was worth a shot, I'll probably just rig it closed. Don't expect passengers in the third row anytime soon and using the cupholder to boot!
I had the same issue on my 2013 S212. I just fixed it yesterday. What I found was that the small hook that engages in the back of the unit to latch it closed was able to flex upwards and over the top of the channel it rides in when latching. (It's a very clever mechanism!) I took the cupholder assembly out of the housing and stuck a thin piece of plastic above the spot where the latch hook attaches to the cupholder assembly. I didn't measure the thickness but it was in the 1/8" vicinity. I used double sided tape to attach it. The result was increased downward pressure on the top of the hook, preventing it from being able to bend far enough upwards to unhook itself. The effort to latch the unit closed went up a wee bit, but nothing that anyone would notice unless they had a before/after comparison.
I'm pleased with the result. I no longer open the third row seat and find the cupholder sticking out!
I don't know if MB re-engineered the part so I can't tell you if a newer unit would fix the issue.
