Wow, just returned from a two day highway journey in Alberta and British Columbia and the pot-holes were unbelievable :-( Huge holes in the middle of the roadway! Spotted most in time, but not all. With deteriorating roadways becoming the new norm, and having already repaired 4 bent rims over the past two years, I'm seriously considering the extra impact protection of a minus-one 17" tire. Anyone gone this route?

usually if your vehicle is sport version/trim, there MAY BE issues with your brake caliper not fitting in the 17" ones.
My E250 Bluetec will accept 16" wheels I have from W211.
Offset is slightly different, but acceptable. But seems 250 is having smaller rotors as owners of 350 said they could not fit them.
So check before buying.
Quite often we had MB sedans at the house on different rims. When changing the car from 18" wheels to 16" wheels will give you first impression of fishtailing, the comfort difference in unbelievable.
Last year I drove to Alaska and BC roads are luxury comparing to those in Yukon and Alaska.
OP probably can do 17", assuming his front brake rotor is the biggest version like mine 344mm and 4 pistons.
What to watch out is the spoke design, because the caliper pops out a lot outward and can hit wheel spoke.
Using other offset/ET alone is no guarantee to clear the brake caliper, unless one choose say an ET38 but it may scrub/hit the Fender ( correction ) when car corner hard and hit a bump.
Mine is ET48 OEM, 18".
Go to the rim/wheel seller and do a test fitting, safest way.
Let me add photos :
OEM, made by Ronald ET48. 18"
ET47 , 18". BBS CH-R Nurg Edition. Spoke design fat, without 5mm spacer caliper collision occurs at the green-dot-dot line I marked
Happy shopping

Reason: typo
I wonder if it is any reassurance that Tire Rack and 1010tires offer a 17" winter tire/rim package for my MY16 E400? As S-Prihadi as clearly demonstrated, the wheel design may cause interference and I doubt these retailers have tested every wheel on every car. Anyone had experience with Tire Rack or another online retailer sending an approved fitment that turned out to be wrong?
Tire Rack is reputable seller for years. If they warranty something, I would trust them.
Still hard to beat costco, amazon or walmart. Anything you don't like - send back with no question ask for full return.
I actually gain double on amazon Prime. Lot of stuff is bought by customers on impulse, than send back. The open box item is sold to prime members at deep discounts, still with amazon warranty.
$2200 cappuccino machine cost me $1200.
