2015 E Class AMG Line Night Edition
Loud cabin noise! Help

I have recently purchased a 2015 (65 plate) E220 Blutec AMG Line Night Edition with 47,500 miles on the clock.

My issue is that it seems to sound like an old hackney cab when idling and driven at low speeds. I've had it for three weeks and at first just thought it was normal as its my first diesel car.

But the more I drive it the more I think there is no way that a luxury saloon should have such engine noise in the cabin.

I have taken the car to an Indy Merc specialist in my area and he had a listen to the engine from the outside and says it sounds normal for the OM651.

I've had a look at a few Youtube videos and the only one which kind of replicates m y experience is
- skip to 4 mins to hear the driving. The comments suggest that the sound has been amplified in some way.

I guess my question is, is this normal? And if not any ideas what could be causing it?

Well, it sounds like a snowblower to me. I hope that isn't the way they all sound.

That's what I was thinking! Did it do that while you were test driving it? Maybe go find another used Benz for sale with the same engine and test drive it? I know when having a diesel some engine noise should be expected, but WOW!

I'm not sure if that video is a little bit dramatic but from the two reactions I can see it's definitely not normal. Here is a video actually of myself starting the car and travelling 50 yards at 10mph.

I suggest having engine and transmission mounts checked. One or more of these being collapsed can cause a lot of cabin noise from the drivetrain and it’s a common issue.

I agree, yours doesn't seem as bad as the first video, LB may be on to something, maybe have the mounts checked. I don't have a diesel and they are very rare here.

I don't know where your located, but maybe there are more diesel owners around you that could help out?

I have no experience with diesels, but another thing I would check or have checked, is whether all of the under hood and under body sound insulation panels are in place. If the under hood blanket is missing, or if panel fit is not right, a lot of noise could intrude into the cabin. Also, do all of the doors and windows, along with sun roof, seal completely?

My car is anything but silent, but a lot of my noise is from the suspension. I have sport suspension with steel springs (no air suspension), so if I run over a matchbook, I can feel and hear how many matches are left in the book. With this setup, I am constantly chasing minor creaks and rattles, as the suspension just beats the car loose. Great car on smooth highways, not so great on the cratered city streets where I live.

Get that checked out. My 2012 E350 is smooth and you can hardly hear engine sounds from inside.

I would have to accelerate really gently to not hear any noise from the M276 in my E350.

I completely agree, my sport and luxury are like night and day, you look at them together and think, how could these almost identical cars be so different ! Guessing really but the luxury must have more insulation somewhere and certainly a way better ride.I will not be buying a sport again, love the car, color, options and looks, but... One thing about the sport, the door jambs don't get dirty, they get trashed in my luxury, I need to wash them weekly with the car wash. the sport just needs to be wiped down with the drying towel monthly.

I have a V6 3.0 diesel in my CLK320 which runs very quiet and agree with the comment above, but I would also suggest that you check the sound proofing material is still present and in good condition.
Hope this helps
