Mercedes Charcoal Canister Shutoff Valve/Car Won’t Start After Fueling

2010 Mercedes E350 4MATIC

This summer, I was at a gas station and my car would not start after fueling. This happened again a week later. My cars battery died the same week and we towed it in for a batter replacement thinking it would solve the problem. Last week, the problem came back after fueling my car. The car will crank but will not start until 5 min of trying. The dealership said they found that my Charcoal Canister Shutoff Valve is closing shut. The problem happened again tonight. Could this be the problem or is something else happening? It is also strange that this has only happened at one gas station and never anywhere else! Hopefully someone has an answer...

Do you top off the tank after the pump shuts off?

I do not need to top it off because it is already full. After a visual inspection it is sticking shut. But should this really be causing my car not to star after filling if it up?

Called my local MB dealer. They said the shutoff valve sticking does not affect car starting. Could this be something with the EVAP systems. Anyone have any pinpoints. They are taking it next week to try and repeat the problem or diagnose it further!

Quick test should provide fault codes for definitive diagnose.

Taking it in next Tuesday to replace the purge solenoid canister mentioned above. Check engine light is on (also could be from the charcoal canister stuck in closed position), the engine will not start up correctly at gas stations, and there’s a very rough idle after filling up. Hopefully this solves it!!

With all do respect intended, Koenigstiger is probably the most cherished asset of this forum and others, I understand this is unsolicited advice but his batting average is in the high 900's.

Yes.

When he answered "yes," you can know the answer is yes.

Oh, great. Something else to look forward to failing. Is this an M-B only device or do other manufacturers use it?

Is this inspected checked when car is serviced at M-B dealerships?

Concerned as my car is over 11 years old, but only 40,000 miles and going in for service next week.
Thanks.

I would not bring it up to the dealer unless there is a valid concern. Just another thing they can check. If your car is having problems starting after refueling, then it is something to look into. Not a super common problem though!

I have had a Kia with a similar problem. I don't think this is anything exclusive to Benz.

It is not. Very common on GM products and on certain mid 2010’s Audi’s.

If you do not try to top off your tank when the nozzle shuts off, you will likely never see this issue, if the pump shuts off and you try to put in that extra 50 cents, you are rolling the dice.
