I think it only makes sense in the corn belt where they don't have to ship ethanol very far. Then the price per gallon is much cheaper than the price per btu, otherwise if they have it ship it pretty far, the price per gallon eats up any savings.

All the ones I pulled out for maintenance changes were still in good shape, but it's not really a huge expense or something you should be avoiding. If the money is really an issue, buy a few tools and change them yourself, it's not too difficult. I would suggest getting the MB socket or an equivalent as it makes the angle they sit at much easier to manage for actual removal and install, it's under $50 from MB last time I checked and it's a great socket for 12pt 14mm plugs, I've used it on other cars as well.
The real waste, my current job at Lamborghini, plugs are required on the 2nd or 3rd year service depending on the vehicle. For most customers that is only a couple thousand miles. I have removed plugs from a car with 300 miles on because it was "time" to change them. Sheer stupidity, but if you have a $600k car, you don't care about spending money replacing 12 plugs more than it matters to show a complete service history.

In my N/A M112 full flex I would get -10% MPG and E85 is about -20% cheaper than super gas, a potential net gain of +10% miles per $.
Tuned turbo engines are a whole different story, with the +100hp gains on E85.

Super simple to do, if you can change a car battery you can change the plugs and should take about an hour. Bosch Double Platinum plugs at Rockauto are about $6 each.
