i spent the better part of an afternoon at the dealer in Monterey, watching cars come and go from the service entrance. While the vast majority of them were newish cars (lotsa 212, 213, C, S, GL*), there was this lovely well maintained W123 300D in silver-blue-grey. Compared with the AMG E55 thing it parked in front of, it had WAY more ground clearance, approach angle.

I note the skirts on my facelift 212 'luxury' are an inch or two higher than the ones on the 212 'sport' that are so prevalent

Yes, I have to be very aware which car I'm driving, my luxury has enough clearance to go over most parking bumpers. my sport does not, it's even worse because I have the AMG package front clip, which is even lower than the plain sport. So when Idrive the wife's car I go down ever apron on an angle and don't go in and out of some drives at all, in fact I switched from Shell gas to Marathon gas because of the apron angle. Their both on the same intersection anyhow!

Back into parking spaces. That way there's no curb to worry about.

many parking lots specifically disallow backing into diagonal spaces. ditto, street side diagonal parking, you'd be going against the direction of traffic.
