Question Does keyless-GO only work if you're outside the car?

One of the safety measures I keep telling my wife & daughter is to lock door right after they get inside the car.
This worked well for the cars we had, that didn't have keyless-GO.

Now that we have an E-class w/ keyless-GO, would an assailant still be able to open the door?
I'm hoping not, as my tests so far show I can only open it, if I hold the key outside the car.

The car knows where the key is using various antenna to triangulate. I don't believe locked doors will be able to be opened from the outside if the key is inside the car.

No, you’re good in terms of bad guys opening the door. Car jacks just point a gun at your head now and demand you get out. These are bad times and best to be as safe as you can. I never sit in my car anymore. When I arrive I get out immediately and when I leave I get in start up and go right away.

Interesting situation we ran into one night: Stopped for gas on the way home from a friend's house (rural area) - before we turned into the station we were at a stop sign and across from us rolled up a 4 door beat up Jetta, with 20-something-ish young men in all seats, they went on down the road...

I have the FOB in my pocket at this: Pumps Only open all night gas station - because the fuel door knows you are there so it will open...

Just a few gallons in and guess what pulls in? The Jetta, but at least 2 bays over... Knocked on the passenger window and said: Start the car, to my wife; which of course she could not do - need to have a foot on the brake pedal... All four doors of the Jetta open and as they are getting out I ram the fuel nozzle back in the pump and the cap in and fuel filler door closed - quick trot around the car and I'm in and lock doors first and punch start button next. And we are so out of there...

Would have been nice for the engine to have been running, or have had a permit to carry, or my Wife driving. But Keyless Go was not our friend that night... Folks that drive nice cars are targets...

My $.02 on one of the downsides of Keyless Go

Does the key need to be near the fuel door if the car is already unlocked?

To each their own, but the auto-lock and unlock only driver side first features really bothered me at first... as none of my older cars had those functions. My wife's (then GF) '08 civic was the first car I experienced it and it annoyed me when she'd drive us. Locks only keep "honest" people out.

If the car is unlocked (all doors), the fuel door is also. You don’t need to have the key on you.

Thank you, but in the moment, I was wishing I had a handgun, and my wife should lock the doors and start the damn car! Sad to say it, but it is a liability and yet a blessing, to carry...

the problem is those thugs would have all come at you simultaneously with their guns and you would have been outnumbered. We just lost a long retired fire chief here in Chicago that was outgunned in a car jacking. He got off a couple shots, but he was no match. You were very smart to pack up and get out of there.
Car jacks in the past were usually perpetrated by one dude. Today they come at you 3-4 at a time.

This kind of thing is only going to get worse, prepare yourself... or drive an ordinary car, I won't, I like my car and my CCW.
No one will come to your defense, you're on your own. Or just give them your car.

Exactly. We are now averaging 5 car jackings per day. Young teens not in school, cars used for other crimes or just joy riding. They will attack in force with handguns to secure the car, often in gas stations. During daylight hours. They don't care when, as long as the opportunity is there. Yes, you are on your own and this is a very sad state of affairs.

It helps to be a 2014 & 2016 State Pistol champ, but I would still probably give up the car rather than put holes in it.

Accuracy notwithstanding, I'll bet you'd have a harder time explaining away holes in the back of a car than holes in the front of a carjacker.

Edited to add: I'd give up the car too.

I'd have no concern where I shoot... It's the random, amateur spray from the cretins that would have me worried for Marvin (and me)...

you know us Texans LOVE guns! and reciprocity is awesome. I was able to CC from Texas, to Wyoming and back...just had to make sure I only took 10rd magazines with me...stoopid Colorado...

but, knowing the car is worth more now than I paid for it 2 years ago, I'd probably just let them have it as well and cash out...time to upgrade!

Some good stuff guys! And yeah, when you get that: hair standing up on your neck, feeling - you need to pay attention! I didn't leave the station slowly, that's for sure...

Wife 1st, car 2nd, all off us gone = best!

on my 2015 if I am near driver door with key in pocket and car is locked... I have had the wife on passenger side unlock car by opening door before I get my hand on handle.
Does not open at first just unlocks and then she can open.

It helps to wear a BP jacket, it's saved me in the shootouts I have been, but I have almost always fought back. The only time I did not was my first carjack. Guy was a "friend". I was young, and naïve at 16. After that a jacket, hollow points, and an accurate, reliable, and loud pistol have been my real friend. Always ALWAYS maintain eye contact with anyone pulling on you. Even if they act normal. And never EVER let them take you with the car EVEN if you don't have a gun. You are at their mercy once you give yourself. If you live in a really bad neighborhood, practice with your family an attempted car jacking. My oldest one (now 22) always knew where my guns were. Now that it's just me (kids are out of the house, and wife passed away) it's easier to take care of myself. I have kept this car because of all the hidden compartments (I have added some too), and it's something I wish they kept on the w213.

My prayers for your wife, I have also been in a similar situation, I did not give up the car, or my honor. If people just give in, this kind of thing will not only continue but escalate. I acquired a Glock for this duty and leave my HK's at home, to expensive to lose!
Obviously no car is worth your life or your families lives. I also adopted a fierce GoldenDoodle 20 lbs. of protection!

Yes! Mine is 14 weeks, nothing but fur and teeth, loves the car, especially the heated seat!

I would definitely give up the car.. not worth a fight for. But is that really all they're after? I mean, the car has tracking on it through the Mercedes app - not that I'd want it back in that scenario.

No, that's not all their after, they also know where the tracking device is and how to quickly disable it. in New York or New Jersey, it's in a container and on a container ship to the Middle East or Africa within hours. Now that's a great Faraday cage!
