Features- AUX Battery Besides Gear and Alternator
I have a 12 e350 blue efficiency and was told by my local Indy, that all it does is allow the car to shift into gears when the main battery dies. Is this correct? Does it power any additional vehicle features? The car does not seem to have the start/stop function. So what happens if your car dies and it cannot be started? Does the main battery still allow for changing gears as long as it has juice? What would happen if the main battery is dead and the car needs to be towed with a 4matic, its just dragged off the road?? LOL
Also, can someone explain to me the Blue E Alternator function? So, it collects kinetic energy during braking, but where does this energy go and how does this benefit the car?
Appreciate the feedback guys/gals!!!

the smart alternator does not store energy, but it does reduce the alternator output to save fuel economy as long as your battery is reasaonbly charged.
on a non-eco stop/start car, the aux battery's main function is to power the electronics when the car is being started, because the starter motor can drag the main battery down to 9V during cranking, this is too low for the engine management computers to reliably run.

I think your confusing ECO models... W212s with ECO use the auxiliary battery to carry the convenience loads during an ECO stop. Earlier non-ECO models, from what I've seen, the auxiliary battery powers the EIS (IIRC). Its main function is allowing shifting if main battery dies.
Many older MBs do not have auxiliary batteries and they start just fine. I'd speculate the PS of the ECU is designed to handle transients with caps or equivalent.

if the main battery on a car as electronic as any of these 212's dies, the car stops right there.

MB is not good in informing customers about features that customer doesn't need to know.
You don't see oil pressure, nor oil temperature, although some drivers are missing those on newer cars.
With several different systems using 2nd battery, it can be pretty confusing, but most common knowledge is, that in early W212 (no ECO stops) the small battery in dashboard operate electric gear shifter and electric steering.
Still, even I like to know what I have under the hood, I did not pull my hairs over that.
