M278 E550 4Matic With Staggered Wheels, Any Issues?

So I'm on the hunt for an E550 and one within my price range is available but it has aftermarket staggered 20" wheels. The condition and maintenance history check out and show that it was well taken care of. However, it has 275/30/20 rear and 245/35/20 front sized tires. I know 235/35/20 would have made the total diameter almost spot on but this setup puts it at 0.26" or 0.97% difference between the front and rears with the rears being slightly smaller. This setup was used on the car for 1 year according to the owner, will this have any detrimental effects I should be worried about?

Calculates out to a 1% difference in roll rate. No issues. The 4M can handle that

I agree. And, you'll be dumping the 20's if you get it, right?

100%. I had some nice forged 20” wheels on my previous BMW 5 series but I’m older now and favor comfort over looks. I’ll find some stock wheels or 19” square setup.

I'd revert to the 18" wheels with 245/45R18 XL, thats undoubtedly what came stock (I could confirm this with the VIN, as that allows pulling the data card with all factory options)

It also looks like the W212 E63 AMG 4Matic models came from the factory with staggered wheels with the rears being 0.3” or 1.15% smaller which also eases my worries. Thanks all for the help!

those have significantly different drive trains, beefed up to handle 600+ horsepower, and with dynamic 4matic, unlike the fixed 45/55% split 'we' get.

Haha the car actually isn't local so I'd need to travel for it. I mean if you're not rolling on dubs, you ain't livin'. In all seriousness, it's funny how 20" seems to be the aftermarket wheel size of choice on the E60 5 series back when I owned it. But that body style is pretty bloated looking so anything significantly smaller looks out of place, especially when lowered. There are even quite a few people that put 20's on the Audi S4 from what I've seen on the forums. Still, I'm about performance > looks so I'd most likely find 18" or 19" flow formed square set of wheels to put on it.

Got a PPI done, negotiated a price, and just booked a flight to go get it and drive it home in a few days. Woohoo! Welp, time to shop for some new car shoes. Going to try to find a 19" set that weighs in the low 20s.

Go with 18”. The car looks best with that.

Do you recommend staggered or square? Staggered seems better in the looks department with the wider rear fenders, but square seems better performance-wise and allows to rotate all tires. Tough choice...

Having had both staggered (2007 E350), and square setups (2014 E350, & 2013 E550. I liked the idea of getting 30k tire life with the square setup by being able to rotate the tires. Never mind the cost of the tires, and the loss of treadwear warranty with the staggered setup. YMMV

I would choose the 18 standard, but really, I'd look up what CAME on that car and try to put it back to the factory options.

why? because. just, because.

Picked up my new to me 2012 E550 yesterday! Flew up to get it and had a 400 mile drive home. Will get some pictures posted after getting it back from some maintenance at the shop. The seats are miles more comfortable than my Audi S4 and I really enjoyed the drive. Car feels planted, solid, and crazy smooth in power delivery.

I've been trying to find a second-hand set of wheels to replace the 20" wheels on my car and am having a hard time finding a set locally with the right wheel and tire sizing/offset. I'm trying to work on a budget and avoiding buying brand new. I did find a set of 5 spoke AMG sport wheels from a 2018 W213 E400 coupe/cab. The front wheels are 19x8 +43 and the rear I believe is 19x9 +49 with 245/40/19 and 275/35/19 tires. I'm assuming these should fit and be good to go with the 4Matic since the total tire/wheel diameter of the fronts and rears are within 0.4% of each other? Just want to make sure the rear inner clearance will be ok with 275 width tires and a +49 offset.

a 245/40R19 is 26.7" outer diameter, while the stock 245/40R18 is 25.9", thats almost 1" difference which will affect the steering, and speedometer, the 19 is 4% larger

a 245/35R19 and 275/30r19 would be the closer size to the 18" staggered.

Good looking out and I didn't catch that! Found a set of what I think are CLS63 AMG wheels with 255/35/19 and 285/35/19 tires on 19x9 +37 and 19x9.5 +52 wheels. Will these rear specs clear the struts/shocks? They sit 17mm closer on the inside compared to stock 18" AMG sport wheels that come on our W212.

yes, the rears will fit. They are probably 285/30-19, not 35. I have those on my E63 AMG wheels, which are 52 ET as well. I have the 245/35-19 up front with 37ET

Oh yup you're right, I made a mistake. It looks like they are E63 AMG wheels based on your info and the part numbers I was given. Thanks!

if they are these BBS multispoke wheels, they are very stout and expensive. Anything under 2K is cheap. Most sets will sell at $3,000-$3,500

I've run 245/35's and 285/30's on staggered TSW's and have no issues on my 2012 E550 4M. These drivetrains are stout. My car makes close to 800lb/ft of torque and it's still trudging along. I've replaced the rear diff with a low milage used unit due to wear(glitter in the oil), but at 135k miles, I'm not too mad about that...
Weakest link is probably the output shaft on the transmission, but only people making lots of power and doing brake-booting launching at higher RPMs (>2000) are twisting/breaking it. Get a good tune(I'm partial to EuroCharged... ) and daily the hell out of it. Good 93 octane tune can run low 12's through the stock exhaust. TCU (transmission) tune is also amazing, IMHO.
Welcome to the club, and enjoy!
