and what's the fix to this. New axle?
Not a chance, unless the grease magically found its way into the ABS reluctor wheel. When degreasing the area (as Cali suggested with brake cleaner) I would wrap the boot around the clamp with something to prevent brake cleaner or any degreaser to sip in. If grease came out, something else can get in.

Now, with the low grease in the axle. Since it is recent, and under the assumption the boot clamp has never been open and separated and put back again by anyone, you can get away with opening the clamp , re-greasing the area, and clamp (replace by a new one) the boot back again.

Now, that is easier to say than done. You do NOT want anything (absolutely anything) to get inside the boot except grease (ONLY approved grease for the MB axle). So, wherever, or whoever is going to do it better now how to work cleanly with those axles. Not sure if there is some grease needle that can be angled between the axle and the boot w/o moving the boot out of its seat area, that will be ideal.

I have not worked on those MB axles myself, but I did learn the hard way with FIAT (Fix It Again Tony) and Renault front axles back in the 80's.

Sure others in the forum have faced this before. Perhaps waiting a bit for some of them to comment further.
