Xenon Headlamp not working - "Left dipped beam" message

I have a 2010 E350 and have a new message popping up coinciding with the left headlamp no longer working. The message is "Left dipped beam". I should also note that the left headlamp has some condensation in it following a lot of rain that we have just had.

When I scan the headlamp module using my icarsoft MB 2.0 i get the following error:
9004- The state of circuit 56b is unreasonable.

I tried changing the xenon bulb but that didn't fix it so i'm guessing it would have to be the ballast that's the issue? Has anyone had any experience with this issue? Do I just replace the ballast or does it need to be recoded to the car?

The xenon headlights have a blocking plate flap that moves up and down for low beams and high beams, it sounds like your flap has stuck in the down position, could be from the condensation/ rust. There are threads about removing the lens and grinding the edge of the flap so it doesn't stick from wear on the hinges, but this is a pretty intricate repair. You could also remove the headlight caps on the rear of the light to let it dry out. It could also be that the mechanism that moves the lens around is stuck or broken/corroded as well.

headlights waterproofing...

Chances are your ballast located at the lowest point got flooded by a tiny bit of water.

You could open it up in a rescue effort to prevent the bridging of electronic components by crusties. In any case it's wasted, so nothing to loose!
Clean crusties with a simple toothbrush. Use Q-tips to dry things... Give us pics

> Part 1:
For all our handy forum friends... apply engine grade RTV Silicone to your headlight wiring connectors before water gets in.

The Benz connector seals are not guaranteed to last.... in other way: guaranteed to leak!
  • Headlights
  • Distronic radar
  • Blind spots radar pucs (rear/front)
  • Trunk kick module
  • (parking sensors)
  • ... any other leakers?

RTV on my headlight connector !

> Part 2:
We can rework the engine-hood side gutters to stop dumping rain on top of our headlights connectors and covers

Rain comes down then goes where....

I propose a dab of RTV or duct tape but that looks real funky so I have not done that... I don't know better

Part 1&2 should help provide more dependable headlights under $1.

Thanks! Did you happen to have the pictures available or a link to the original posts about that?

I know... EVERY MB is different even the headlights use different light source.

Generally when you look at the rear of headlight on passenger side you can see the wire harness.

Beware these headlights are powered 24/7... powere is switched locally. HL communicate with each other digitally. I recommend you disconnect batteries before dealing with HL.

"LAUNCH cReader Elite" scanner supports these digital ballast modules.
