I don't want to hijack this thread, so I will address it in a separate one.

I have used openscad only with others' creations where I can tweak the parameters to make what I want. That's a really powerful program for making parametric threaded objects.

Tinkercad is really easy to pick up. They have a tutorial. It is all I use for original designs. This design started as a cylinder where I started subtracting things with wedge/triangle shapes

This shows how I did it: (obviously very simplified)
  • Create a cylinder, add an oval cylinder "hole", then "group" them to make a hollowed out cylinder
  • Stack a bunch of "hole" objects to make the cutout for the cupholder "finger", place them and "group" them to make the cutouts in the sides of the cylinder
  • Add a wedge "hole" on top to make the sloped top surface that matches the edge of the cupholder, group it again
  • Finally add the cutout for the phone - a rectangular "hole" - this is where I adjusted the cutout to get the right angle in all three axes. This took the most time. I had to print it a few times to get it right. You can use a thick layer height and low infill (looks like ***) to prototype it quickly.

It's a very clever design! The only thing I would suggest is making the angled grooves 1/4 - 3/8" deeper to hold the iPhone vertically a bit more securely.

Having experimented with my holder, I am not convinced this is needed at all.

This was the part that caused me to make the most test prints. That last cut for the phone itself was rotated slightly in all three dimensions to make it work better - which means that these adjustments could be optimized when accommodating different phones.
I shared the link to thingieverse earlier. One could pick up where I left off and adjust that last cut to make it work better for their phone.

Few people have 3d printers, but they can edit this model for free and get their local library to print it out.
