Aftermarket Alarm

Has anyone installed an aftermarket alarm? I would like an alarm that can detect when the door is opened. Anyone install one of these?

The factory alarm will alert to a pried open door if it has been locked by you. I don’t get the redundancy

I have an E550 cabriolet. Because it is a soft top, I usually leave the car unlocked. I guess I figure if the car is locked and someone wants inside the car they would just slice the top.

So, if your convertible is locked with the windows up, anyone slashing the top would have to climb on the trunk to enter the car, or break a window. I think the alarm will activate with either.

And then I would have to pay to replace the top, which I'm trying to avoid.

You have insurance to deal with that. I’ve owned many convertibles including the present day and yes they have been slashed. The price of open air and living in an urban environment. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Although, I did have one slashed in the Black Hills of SD in the middle of nowhere…

I'm not convinced that an aftermarket alarm will prevent anyone from slashing your top, sorry.

You think if someone wanted inside my car and the doors were unlocked they would still slash the top?

No, they would simply steal your car, leaving you to explain to your insurance company why you intentionally leave it unlocked. (Fail)

Locking your car readies the alarm. Anyone attempting entry will trigger the alarm. That would be enough audible deterrent to scare off the person.

Few -- if any -- would stick around long enough to slash your roof.

When I was a young man 40 years ago, I left my convertible parked in Palo Alto, every morning I found a guy sleeping in it, he was neat, no messes but it aggravated me. he was not dangerous, but I would lock the car and he would just pop the snaps on the roof to get in, this went on for a whole semester! Since, I've had four convertibles but no-one ever slashed the roof to get in, but I do understand your concern, either way I lost until I moved, so I just lived with it thinking, this is how it is out here. Lock your car, if they want it bad enough to slash the roof you won't have to worry because it's unlikely you'll ever see it again!

In my case, it was a TR7 so he wouldn't have gotten far anyways, LOL

This is a very humorous story... Thanks for sharing.

Me, I would have called the campus police.

I do wonder how anyone can sleep comfortably in that tiny Triumph. Do the seats even recline? Yours must have been the ONLY convertible available that semester.

The seats do recline, but nowhere for them to go unless moved forward. It would be very uncomfortable, but maybe better than a park bench or the ground on a rainy cold night.

Only in California! he was a short little man of Mexican decent, so a foot shorter than Key08, damn that TR8 brings back memories and the Vicky -Brit bills.
I did call the police a couple times, but I would only actually see him on Tuesdays and Thursdays as I had early classes.
