Another 5s1 Comand Upgrade from 4.7 step by step

My 2015 vehicle has an older NTG 4.7 system. From factory, I had 360 camera, universal media interface for center console connection, harman kardon amplifier and satellite radio. For this upgrade, I obtained the following to complete the upgrade.

1. NTG5 Comand Used. (must not be stolen or you cannot remove anti-theft function)
2. Updated Screen
3. Updated bezel around screen.
4. Updated Harman amplifier. (older one operates at different BUS Speed and will not work)
5. Updated Satellite Radio Tuner. (older one operates at different BUS Speed and will not work)
6. Replacement center console dial/joystick. Older one operates a different speed and will not work.
7. Updated 360 Camera Control module. The older wiring from each of the 4 cameras will be fine. A single LVDS Cable will be required from the control module to the comand system. The older FAKRA connector will not work.
8. Updated all 4 cameras on vehicle. The older cameras have a different grainy resolution. The newer cameras are much sharper.
9. LVDS Cable from comand to center console for USB Jacks.
10. A few MQS pins since the QUADLOCK connector on rear of command has to be repinned.
11. Two sets of 2 pair wires for the Ethernet wiring to OBD connector. (the newer NTG5 comand units require ethernet to the OBD for flashing the unit only. If you already have current flash on it, you can technically pass this step.
12. A single wire from the front sam to rear of the comand. The current cooling fan on my car is powered off the NTG4.7 comand. The NTG5 does NOT provide power for this fan and it must be obtained directly from the front sam.
13. Two wires from the older Media Interface located behind glovebox to the USB jacks.
14, WLAN Antenna and related Fakra wire to rear of comand unit.
15. Fiber Bypass Loop for where the older media interface sits.

Step 1. I repinned all the wires from the older quad lock. You must be able to read wiring diagrams for this step. Compare the NTG 4.7 to NTG 5s1. You will be left with 2 wires for cooling fan (ground and power) after completing this transition.
Step 2. Replace the rear Harman Amplifier. Direct swap
Step 3. Remove the older Satellite Tuner on rear left of trunk. The newer unit is much bigger and actually located on right side of trunk of 2016 cars. Instead of rewiring the car and ordering another bracket, i mounted the new tuner to the old bracket. I have plenty of room on rear left of car since my car does not have AIRMATIC (large silver tank) in that area. This was the easiest to do plus the fiber and power cables are a direct swap.
Step 4. Remove Glovebox and you will see a media interface under the cross bar. It needs to be removed and the fiber loop needs to be reconnected using a bypass. I ordered one off amazon. You must complete the fiber loop or nothing will work. You cannot leave a "break" in the fiber. You can dispose of the media interface as all that logic is now built into the NTG5 comand unit.
Step 5. Replace the rear 360 camera module with updated module. All 4 cameras MUST be replaced. Older ones will not work. You will also need to run the LVDS cable from the control module on rear right of trunk to comand unit. You can skip this step if you do not have 360 camera or wish to not add it.
Step 6. Install the WLAN antenna with Fakra cable to rear of comand.
Step 7. Replace the screen. The power connector on rear of screen needs the tab cut off to fit. The LVDS cable fits directly however, it will not display anything. You can do one of two things here. Get a replacement correct LVDS cable from 2016 vehicle year. OR. Cut the lock tab off the LVDS Cable and rotate it 180 degrees on rear of screen and it works perfectly fine.
Step 8. Run the LVDS cable from comand to center console area for the USB jacks.
Step 9. Run power and ground from the connector that was removed for the media interface behind glove box to the USB jacks.
Step 10. Replace the center console joystick controller. Direct swap.

Coding Steps to follow on next post with updated pics.

Replacement NTG5s1 Comand unit temporarily mounted to test.

Replacement NTG 5s1 screen installed with LVDS cable flipped 180 degrees on rear of screen.

Original location of the media interface required for NTG 4.5 and NTG 4.7 comand units behind glove box.

HK Amplifier on rear left trunk wall replaced with updated version to work with NTG 5s1

Satellite tuner temporarily installed ot test. Notice the empty bracket on wall where the original tuner module sat. The replacement unit will be mounted to this bracket. The factory location of this tuner module on 2016 cars is on the rear right of the trunk wall. This would require fiber and power wires to be relocated to right.

Replacement 360 camera module installed. Notice the fakra connector is missing on this updated module. The white connector with missing cable is the LVDS connector that goes to the comand unit. The green and blue LVDS connections are for the 4 cameras.

While I was running cables, I decided to run the cable for the 115v inverter that is mounted on rear right of trunk. Power outlet is provided to rear of center console.

This loop completes the fiber ring once the media interface is removed behind the glove box.

This is the media interface that is located behind glovebox. It interfaces the rectangular connector in center console to the older NTG 4.5 and 4.7 comand units. This is no longer required.

Just a minor update. Sound now works through the replaced hk amp. I ran the lvds cable from comand to usb jacks in center console. The usb jacks also require three additional wires. Power, ground and wake-up. These are the three wires found at the media interface behind glove box. Correction to above thread where I stated two wires were required.

Good write-up. You're braver than me! Couple of questions:
  • Anything broken ?
  • Total cost of components?
  • If I don't use satellite radio, can I just bypass the unit with a MOST fiber passthrough? I'm assuming it's a part of the ring and therefore either has to be bypassed or updated
  • My mother has a 16 and there doesn't appear to be a way to assign the camera as a favorite button. I have mine assigned to the 360 camera and use it to invoke the camera when necessary.

1. Nothing Broken.
2. I bought everything on Fleabay except wiring harnesses and connectors which I got from local dealer.
3. Yes you can just install bypass loop and remove your old SAT tuner.
4. I have not looked into this.

Hi SuniLP,

I'm currently stuck with the conversion myself and would be really grateful if you could help me. I'm upgrading my W212 2015 E220 Avantgarde from NTG 4.7 to NTG 5S1 (W207 Command) and unfortunately I'm stuck. I would be very grateful if you could help me with this!
