Can't pass CA smog. Code 456

2011 E350.

When I fill my tank full I can smell gas fumes outside the car pretty strong. It goes away when tank is 75% full.

My 2003 E350 had same problem which was related to a recall you could have fixed for free but I never did it. I am pretty sure this leak is causing the code 456 now so I

am wondering if others have had this issue and is there a recall for this year same fuel tank problem?

There are some issues with cracked pump housings and leaking cover O-rings that are not uncommon. The only question is which opening side is leaking: L/R ?

You can check for recalls on MBUSA web portal with your VIN#, right? Konigstiger has the pulse on that channel.

P0456 is an evap system leak, basically, the gas tank isn't holding a mild vacuum when the car is off.

you pretty much have to go through the whole evap system checking for cracked or loose hoses, cracked fittings, and/or a bad evap charcoal canister. or it could be as simple as a leaky gas cap.

Thanks. I heard about the gas cap thing before so maybe I will try that first. Otherwise the shop says they can pump in smoke thru the system and see where it might be leaking. They also mentioned the pump and O ring thing too. Not sure how much it will be to fix. Let you know.
