Since we're an Android family, and my wife is always misplacing stuff, I invested in Tile tags, have one on each Mercedes fob, have several in my wife's various pocketbooks and wallets, and it can also be used to find the phones that are registered to it. Its been surprisingly useful. The other day my wife was borderline late for leaving for an appointment, and couldn't find her keys, Tile found them in the dirty laundry basket in the bathroom.

I guess I got a good deal too! Only $624.75 at Park Place Motorcars in Fort Worth in 2020, I did have to go there twice, once for them to collect data and order the key from Germany, and then come back for a quick visit to finalize everything once it arrived.

39 days later, the key has arrived. Went to the dealer this morning and the Service Advisor opened the envelope in front of me, and unlocked+started the car with the key straight away. No programming required.

Had them take the car in to disable the missing key that the previous owner never provided.

Then I went home with $950 missing from my account but 2 keys in my pocket.

Can you confirm if that was keyless go that worked straight from the box, or a knob?
$950 for 2 keys?

Sorry not sure what you mean with the first question. If I understood it correctly, the SA didn't use keyless go to unlock the car right after he removed the key from the envelope. We were standing inside the dealership and he just clicked the unlock button and after getting in to the car, he removed the push start button and inserted the key fob to start the car just to verify that it worked. He claims that's what they're told to do when testing new keys.

I've actually yet to test if keyless go even works properly with the new key.

Also, no unfortunately not $950 for 2 keys. When I bought the car, the previous owner only gave me one key. The scuffed up key on the left in the picture is the one I've been using this whole time and the key on the right is the shiny new one.

Inserting the key into ignition might be the pairing.
Still I was charged 1 hr for key programming when I had my keyless go delivered. Here goes another myth dealers are spreading to have your $$$.
I know Dubai is more expensive than USA, but still almost a grand for the key......

Well, if this "Infidel" lived in the Middle East, I would probably PANIC at least once a day...

Ummmm... OK, nothing more to see here... Let's move on, hehe.

I made sure with the SA multiple times that programming wouldn't be involved, because this dealer never sticks to time commitments, so if they said it'll take an hour, it means I'll have to leave the car with them for the entire day and then they'd charge me their absurd labour rate for plugging in a laptop and pressing a few buttons.

Honestly, I've only ever seen the panic button on MBs imported from North America. None of the Middle Eastern spec cars have the button on the key. Probably some legal requirement in the US that MB isn't obligated to fulfill here.

Do the Dubai cars not have an alarm system by default ? The panic button might go along with the alarm system.

I think you're right. I believe the alarm system is included with SA Code 551 and 882 which do not show up for my VIN.

To add a data point - I stopped by Mercedes Benz of Sarasota FL today to order a key. $405 for the key, $239 for the hour of programming time they say it needs. Interestingly, they took my payment for the key and pictures of my documents for the order today, but did not touch the car. They said when the key comes in, they will call me to schedule a time to bring the car in for the programming. But from what I read in this thread, aren't they supposed to connect to the car before they even order the key? Then it comes pretty much ready to go? 2014 E350 wagon without keyless start.

FWIW, this is not THAT much more expensive than the key I bought last year for my 2004 Volvo V70. The big difference being the dealer in Maine that did that key is $100/hr cheaper. Was still almost $500 for the old Volvo. Modern cars, sigh. I get the why, but it really does seem egregiously expensive to replace a key.

At least I had a spiff from a vendor though work that paid for $550 of it! Like a Christmas bonus!

Considering to $36,000 for key for Bugatti, all of the above is cheap.
But I still think $405 for knob and 1 hr for programming is rip off.
My Sprinter key really needed programming and the dealer charged me for 1/2hr or $90
