Steering wheel replacement

Hi guys, I want to replace my original steering wheel - w212 E350, 2010

My old steering wheel is the same.

New one.

Can I swap the steering wheel directly without any modifications. Does all buttons and gear paddles will work.

new functions ....

Refreshing the looks used to be a popular mod.

Any new function such as paddles will need to be coded. Benz parts are the opposite of "plug-n-play" with coding requirements.

Your easiest choice is to contact our forum sponsor @BenzNinja who can remote program your wheel functions while you watch.

funky connections repair

While your wheel is disassembled... it's a perfect time to check/repair for solderless buttons and control circuit boards.

wheel main controller... LoL

The old steering wheel has paddles, too. The picture angle is not good. The buttons and functions for the two steering wheels are the same. The two are from cars equal year (2010). The three spoke steering wheel is from w207. I have doubts about connectors.

a same year 207 and 212's wheels /probably/ have compatible controls. I've not dug into the WIS to look, but I bet all those buttons go to a little processor on the board inside the wheel, which digitally encodes them and sends messages over a CAN bus or something.

I've never changed a steering wheel, but that's the steering wheel in my E350 CDI from 2009-2010. I'd be surprised if it didn't plug and play!

the complication is, one is an E 'coupe', and the other a E 'sedan'. the coupes are W207 which are more closely related to the C class cars rather than the W212 sedan/wagon chassis

and yes, I pulled up a random W212, the early E350 tmodel (wagon) 212.256 with engine M272, and indeed, the steering wheel control module talks to the front SAM via CAN B and to the Vehicle Floor Chassis CAN distribution via CAN E, so the odds are pretty good of various modules needing coding to mate a different steering wheel with them.

I have seen one of forum members swapped his steering wheel to W206's. So, if it works this swap should work too
I had changed mine too when I had a prefacelift model as well but it was back in 2012 as I recall

Does anyone can explain me how the paddle shifters work. I can activate the direct gear shifting with the left paddle only and deactivate it by holding down the right paddle. Does it normal to cannot activate it with the right paddle and cannot deactivate it when hold down the left? Other than that shifting down with left and up with right works as I expect.

on my 2016 E350, you can activate it by tapping either paddle, shifting up or down from the gear you're currently in. if you don't shift for some number of minutes, or if the RPM gets too far out of hand for the gear you're in, it automatically reverts to full automatic.

Here I watch a video for w204 steering wheel retrofit and at the 9:01 it is showed that you cannot go higher from D with the right paddle. So may be that a usual behavior for the early w212, too.

At least in "E" econo mode, D will indeed default to being in the highest 'safe' gear at a given speed, cruising at ridiculously low RPMs, like right around 1000 rpm, so I guess it makes sense it wouldn't let you manually shift into an even higher gear.
