2010 E350 C-clip for power steering

Hello folks, I recently replaced my oil cooler seal due to a leak and had to remove the power steering reservoir.

The C-clip was a major headache to remove and seems to be 10 times the headache to install it.

I installed the 3 main contained screws of the power steering reservoir to the block. Silly question, is it necessary to install the C-clip?

By the way, this was a very helpful video to reference the power steering reservoir:

In my experience they are easier to install then to remove in hard to reach places. Personally I wouldnt feel right not installing it.

I hear ya and that’s why I’m here.

for my procedure I did not remove the hose clamp and hose. Perhaps if I remove it it will be easier to install. I’m trying to avoid making a mess and thought maybe it’s not even a big deal if it’s not installed. But my gut feeling tells me it’s there for a reason.

Thanks a bunch! I see there is a special tool. I wish there was a video on the web of someone using it. Although, I will remove the hose and try some old-school leveraging techniques first.

The video is worth watching even if you are at the end of the installation (notice I linked straight to the reservoir installation)

I would replace the C-clip so that is its returned to factory spec to avoid any possibility of power steering fluid leaking at the gasket. Screws on the reservoir aren't enough imo.

Thank you. After reviewing the videos a few times and removing the hose, I was able to install the clip by hand. Using thicker mechanic gloves allowed me to insert the clip without having to leverage a socket. If you use thin gloves it will likely hurt your fingers.
