E400 m276 temp gauge below 80 update: it was the thermostat

hey all, a week or so ago i was here asking about my temp gauge dropping further than usual. turn out it was the thermostat

for those of us here with the TTV6, you have to remove the intercooler. i’ve posted a few pics here so you can kind of follow along if you like to DIY. sorry but if you need clarification let me know 🫡

new thermostat on left, old one on right

you have to:

- take off the belly pan

- drain the coolant with either the little tab beside the driver side (left) front wheel [i didn’t i just pulled the coolant hose and then let it drain]

- i took off the oil filter housing to get some space

- loosen the clamp on the underside of the rubber that connects the pipes to the cooler, and the other big pipe up top that connect to the cooler

- (you slide the black rubber that the loosened clamps on on, downward into the pipes and away from the intercooler

- push that little piece up and slide the cooler forward and off

- gotta take off the belt, you know the deal, big ratchet and push left to loosen it and slip it off (mark it with a marker if you want)

- there are like 3 bolts to take off, to remove the thermostat

part cost me 145 and work was freeeee because it was personal work 🫡

Thanks for the writeup... seems like the thermostat is buried compared to older models, a shame it took so much effort to replace such a simple part.

Wow... that is a lot of self-opening aka stuck

Shock,
You do have the VVT window leaking oil ... it would happen sooner or later.

Your alternator, its closest side to the engine lower block too.

Best to get rid of this leak.

Wet from liquid coolant and oil trace accumulating dust are so very different visually.
We see better using photos, because when we work on engine bay, our eye height is too tall to see those oil trace accumulating dust. Flash on the camera also give us good definition.

Me with bad near distance eye and rely a lot on camera images...age related, what to do

To clean these area below I marked red on your photo, which is the engine block side of the alternator, I rely on photos a lot and its so difficult to feel only with fingers when the eye can't see.

Until you remove your alternator and start to spray de-greaser ( I use Simple Green & some Carb Cleaner ), a dried up oil film wont look so bad.

The red line above, is the engine side of alternator as seen at image below

Red arrows below is areas VERY VERY difficult to clean.

Happy cleaning............

Thanks for this writeup! About to tackle this myself. Working on the Benz is so much harder than my BMW as there is very little detail (procedures) available online besides posts by owners!.

Had a question about the charge air system, you mentioned you drained the coolant from the bottom (from the radiator). However, how did you go about draining the coolant from the intercooler?

Second, how is the intercooler installed on there, is there any special trick to remove it or will it come right out once the hoses are removed from the turbo side and the Throttle body side?

Lastly, how did you go about burping the intercooler during coolant refill?

Thank you!
