Absolutely, we know early phase of cam timing is being advanced leading to improved low end drivability. See above post oldmanandhiscar and response.

Unfortunately, NOT IN THE SLIGHTEST if it WAS fuel wash…
This isn’t exclusive to MB’s. This type of failure is seen in other brands too.

Sorry this happened to your friend. Did he hear piston slap first or was it compression failure that led him to tear down.
Did He test injectors to confirm?

Does he drive with ECO mode on? Many times the car will fail go into ECO mode with stuck injectors.

Good Luck

No piston slap or misfire. Piston slap sounds like cartoon.

Car started consuming more oil and oily liquid started coming out from exhaust on cold start. It happened many years ago. Nobody knew about m278 cylinder scoring yet.

He bought new engine with very low mileage and now car has already 400 000km driven and no issues. New engine has 200 000 km
on it now and 190k with remap. He keeps injectors and plugs in check. Changes oil frequently. His car is tuned for more than 300k km now and he drives very had. Many drag races every year and full throttle every day to keep the oil solenoid in check. Btw car still has original turbos with 400 000 km on them.

The cylinder scoring is probably less common than it looks or you have to drive hard to keep the solenoid in check.
