Yes but if we are talking about M278s, there are barely any E550 coupes with the cast iron liners. Probably barely any S550s. And really maybe mostly later X166 GLS550s. It's a small sample set.

I would say most 2016 GL550 fall after the engine number listed at the top of the thread, which also means all 2017-2019 GLS550 would also..

I have a 2013 E550 coupe (M278), engine went bad at 45k miles in 2019. Mercedes replaced block and right head ($3k under Goodwill Assistance with 3yr/36k warranty), I took it. I am thinking the old block was silitec and hoping new block is nanoslide. New block currently at 50k miles. Any part # to ref on old vs new block?

An injector carboning up (reduced flow) is also noted to cause increased cylinder/piston temps, which can also score the cylinder. So yeah, the fuel system seems culpable here.

Wondering why an injector would carbon up since it is continuously washing the tip with fuel. I'm not saying it doesn't since all the fuel additive companies say their stuff "cleans fuel injectors", just wondering why it does. If you are experiencing increased temps because of obstructed injectors, it's because you are running lean.

Not to hijack a thread, but for the 6cyl M276 engine, I'm trying to figure out when they switched back to cast iron.
Is there an engine code cutoff number for that engine that anyone knows?

Nanoslide might have been introduced with turbocharged M276 (M276.8).

It's fascinating to consider the technology introduced to assemble an aluminum block with cast iron barrels, as those are very different materials and high tech we can see with Silitec and Nanoslide. Could it be as simple as a sleeve? and if so the renewal should be very simple. Has anyone come across some details?

Iron liners can score, because it has happened since day 1 of the internal combustion engine. The question is, are later M278s (or even M157s) somehow, fundamentally, better and longer lasting? Do we really have data on this? We know early timing chain systems are problematic, sure. But that's only the start of the potential list of issues.
