W217 S500 with the highest miles on the World loosing boost

Hi,

i am from Turkey and own an S Coupe m278 engine. I think it has the highest miles on the world with first engine and turbo and gearbox. It has 330.000 miles (530000 km) and still drives like a dream. I have now the following problem. When i start the car it runs fine and boost pressure is ok. But after 3 to 5 minutes it looses all the boost pressure. When i restart the car boost pressure again there for 3 to 5 mintutes. It has fault code p0299. Alteade changed the solenoid for wastegate.
i have a little rattle at the turbos but i dont understand why it only has boost for a few minutes.
Any help is appreciated.

Congratulations on getting such high mileage on your M278 engine! If you don't mind me asking was there any special maintenance or way you cared for the engine that has kept it running smoothly for so long?

The car has had its regular isnpections at the dealer and the miles are almost only driven on highway. I would say 95% highway miles. No special maintanance. 22 inspection till now 😁
But the car drives still like 50.000 miles.

That is turbo underperformance check for boost leaks and check turbo for play and wear.
At that millage it would not be surprising if you need a new turbo.

I would put money on it being the wastegate actuators, I had a c300 that was doing the same thing. A restart would fix it for a few minutes.

Are the actuators different from the solenoids that he has replaced?

I think its the wastegate flaps in the turbo. Does the engine have to get out to change these?

I admire your well preserved car! And I am surprised this topic deserved so little attention by the community. So please allow me to ask you some questions.

I intend to buy an S Coupe as a daily for long term and to put a lot of miles on it (not nearly as much as you though). But as an E55 owner I am used to a problem free engine. So the m157 is out of the list. It is good to hear that your 2015+ m278 is so durable.

1. How often do you change the oil? Some do it every 5000-7000 km (3000-4000 miles). But a very skilled mechanic said this should be done only if you drive it primarily in town traffic, while "changing oil that often if you mainly use it on the highway would have a placebo effect."

2. Could you point some major repairs that you did?
3. What is the approximate amount of money that you spent on maintenance?
4. Was there a significant increase in maintenance cost after 100, 200, 300.000 miles?

I did the oilchanges only when car showed to be serviced so every 25.000 km. It is an highway car for 95%. I didnt have any major problems till now. The turbo flaps are changed and the engine had to come out for that. That was the only major problem. I am not a very fast driver. I am still enjoying my car every time i drive it. Almost every part is still orijinal.

Did you check it's vacuum line for leaks, it seems to disintegrate with age.
