DIY: Remove/replace Front seat outer trim

Next, simply slide off the whole assembly: the trim piece along with the airbag. They’re attached by that one small screw that was obscured by the seat backrest. You can see the small screw in this photo.

I am pointing to that screw. Removing this screw will completely detach the trim piece. I did not do this part because all I wanted was to reseat the whole trim piece. There is a second screw you will have to remove before this whole assembly is detached from the seat. I’ll show you below. I didn’t have to do it because mine was broken loose.

Here is the front side of that trim piece already detached.

I slid it backwards toward the rear seats.

If yours isn’t broken like mine was, you’ll have to remove this second screw which holds the trim piece to the seat frame. So in summary, there are two 8mm screws holding the air bag to the seat frame, and 2 t25 screws holding the trim piece to the same seat frame.

Here I’m showing my minor repairs. Glued the broken pieces back together using E6000 glue and some clamps.

Gluing the part of the seat trim that came loose.

It’s a bit hard to understand in this pic, but if the reader performs this repair, it’ll make sense. The arrow is pointing to the part of the trim that slides onto a metal tab of the seat frame. Mine had come loose. Not sure how that happened since it requires loosening the trim to remove but it happened. Not sure how. I just glued a small crack it had and used a paper clamp to hold it together while the glue set.

this last photo shows it back to normal.

just put everything back together in reverse order.

the whole process took me 2 hours cause I was figuring it out as I went along. I ca. probably knock it out in an hour now.

I might have misremembered the screw sizes, but it’s so obvious that I won’t go back to verify and edit this post.

again, hope this helps someone in the future.

cheers!

Whoa, not sure what happened! It deleted my first dozen photos and explanation.

sorry, that’s the last set of steps. In the posts below, I’ll show the first steps!

apologies I had no idea the forum deletes photos as you go. Maybe it was too many for one post.

anyway, I wanted to park this thread here to show anyone in the future how to remove the front seat outer trim. I couldn’t find how to do this online so I created this thread for future DIYers. Sorry it’s a bit out of order. These rest of the posts will be in order and that first post above is the last one.

my car is a 2014 E350 wagon. In summary, you’ll have to detach (not remove) the seat bottom in order to remove this trim piece because there are some screws that are obscured by the seat bottom. You’ll also be detaching (not removing) the seat airbag because it is attached to this seat trim with one screw and that screw is obscured by the seat backrest.

cheers.

For some unknown reason my seat trim was detached from the frame. Have no idea how this happened but it might be a small crack that formed on the trim tab that slides over the seat frame tab. I am pointing to the trim piece. That small gap between the trim and seat bottom should not be there

Showing how far loose this trim piece was on my seat.

First start by removing the storage bin. It’s super easy with only two screws to remove, one on the outside and one on the inside by the center console.

Here’s the inner one. Remove both screws and lift off the storage bin. Super easy once the screws are removed.

Once you remove the storage bin, you’ll detach but not remove the seat bottom. It’s easy, as it’s only held in place by two screws that are attached to C-clamps. Those screws were covered by the storage bin.

One of the screws. Remove it and it will kisses the c clamp that holds the seat bottom to the frame.

Shows the second screw near the center console.

Another angle of the screw.

Now the seat is loose.

Now you’ll detach the various smaller trim pieces attached to the main outer trim piece. this will help to expose the screws you’ll need to access.

Start by removing this small trim piece. Just snaps out.

Easy

Then losses the inner trim piece. A little harder but not too bad.

There.

That inner trim piece extends to the rear of the seat. Detach as well. Use a little force.

Now wriggle it out of the frame altogether.

It’s out!

Next, remove this little corner trim piece. I used a plastic trim remover tool cause it was too hard with a finger alone.

This exposes one of two screws that is holding the trim piece to the seat frame. This screw is hard to remove because the seat backrest covers it. I don’t have a tool to get to it so I removed the air bag assemble. It’s really easy and I show it in the following steps.

To remove the airbag assembly,, there are two screws. One in the rear and one on the side near the seat bottom that you just detached a few steps above. It’s an 8mm screw.

Used a small ratchet.

Second screw is here. Once the seat bottom is detached you can see it and remove it.

Same 8mm socket. Easy.

Once that airbag assembly is removed you can slide the whole side trim piece backward toward the rear seats. This will expose that small screw I mentioned above. There’s another screw that you’ll have to remove as well before you slide it backward. I show it below. Mine was broken off the of trim assembly so I did not have to do this but I presume you will have to.

Here’s that other screw you’ll have to remove. As you can see, mine was broken off so as soon as I detached the air bag assembly, the trim piece just slid right off.

Here’s another angle showing another broken tab on my trim piece. This one doesn’t matter. It doesn’t do anything other than add extra strength.

Here’s me sliding the whole trim piece and airbag assembly off of the side of the seat.

And here’s that screw you’ll remove to completely detach the trim from the seat and airbag assembly.

Forgot to mention that you’ll Remove this screw as well. It’s holding the outer trim to the seat frame from the rear.

Easy to remove.

Now you can go back to post #1. It reiterates the removal of the trim/airbag assembly and the rest of the steps that I took for my particular problem.

good luck! Again, apologies for the clumsy order of things.
