Humming sound from the rear

I have 2011 e200 with 150 miles, and now hearing some humming noise, not really sure if its from the rear its kind of coming from under the car. The noise is consistent at around 60mph and lower, I ruled out the bearings as i changed to new ones and new tyres. If I go 70+, I don't hear anything. And one more thing when I'm hearing that sound i tryed shifting to N humming sound is gone. Any ideas? Trans? Diff?

Could be diff, is yours 4MATIC? Anyways you might want to change the diff fluid.

Definitely worth changing that fluid then especially if there is no record of it changed.

Soud like your trans. In case you shift to N and humming noise gone, it not your diff. So fist check your trans mount, transfer case rubber, if mount and rubber is good, check your cross ball at booth ends of transfer case, and last is check your trans. Good luck.

Could be drive shaft (Propeller Shaft) from tranny to rear differential. This shaft has a center bearing that is mounted in a rubber housing. This rubber sags over time and changes the angle at the U-joint that is located right next to the bearing.

Rubber housing allows bearing to move radially under different torque conditions and when you put your tranny to N the torque goes away and the bearing moves changing the angle at joint. This could be the reason why humming (vibration) stops.

There also are rubber flex disks at each end of the propeller shaft that over time develop cracks and can cause vibrations under torque.

Then, if the tranny mount sags it also changes the Propeller shaft angle and could lead to vibrations.

I would check the tranny mount first, flex disks second and then the propeller shaft center bearing. This bearing probably is fine but the rubber housing is not. I changed this bearing on my S550. The rubber housing had sagged about 1/8”. I think E-class has the same design.

A lot of good advice given. Please say you don't put the car in Neutral at 60 mph!

WRT changing the tranny fluid, I would do that regardless if you don't know when it was last changed. Depending on whether you have the red or blue fluid (THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGABLE!!!), you may be long overdue for a transmission service. Red fluid (ATF-134 or MB 236.14) should be changed around 40,000 miles and blue fluid (ATF-134FE or MB 236.15) should be changed around 70,000 miles. Figure around $600-$700 at the dealer, but a lot cheaper than a new transmission.

I had a similar symptom with my old W204. Light humming noise only in 7th gear and low RPM. It turned out to be a sign of worn engine/transmission mount. It might be worthy a try.

As long as you decode the VIN on mbvin and check your transmission then use the appropriate fluid for that transmission you should be all set.

I had a 2011 E350 and it had the red 40 000 mile fluid. You have a 5 speed box (never heard of such thing before) and as such it should be even older design so the red fluid would be the one.

One way to make sure is ask the dealer. Just give them the VIN and they will know. Also, your service manual should say what the fluid change interval is. 40 000 means red and 70 000 means blue like JettaRed already mentioned.

Does that mean if OP has WIS then if they plug the VIN in, it should not list the other fluid?

5G is red.

But in your case, only change ATF will not help.

On the 7G transmission (first one to use the blue oil as far as I know), you need to check your car data card for the Fuel Efficient (FE) torque converter and the A89 (REDUCED-FRICTION) option. They indicate your transmission uses the blue oil (ATF-134FE or MB 236.15). For the newer 9G transmissions I have no information.
