Question About Steering Wheel Compatibility

I’m planning to buy a used steering wheel for my car, as my current one has deteriorated significantly. I found one on eBay with the part number A 218 460 0618 / 8R01, while my car's current steering wheel has the part number A 218 460 0818 / 8R01.

From the outside, both steering wheels look identical, but I’m unsure if all the functions (like Active Lane assist) will work as they should since the part numbers are different.

Can someone help clarify the differences and whether the replacement will be fully compatible before I make the purchase?

This is the one I intend to buy.

I do not think that the wheel has anything to do what so ever with the lane control or any other thing than selections and what not (volume, radio, menu's). Some of the newer style have more "selections" but the wheel (to the best of my information) is nothing but a bunch of "switches".

Take your wheel apart. Remove everything from the oem wheel and install in the replacement.

Same suggestion! Use just the frame from the replacement wheel.

One thing I've noticed is that your wheel seems to be brown while the picture of the replacement one seems to be black.

I would not gut a thing - take the new wheel, connect it (this takes about 20 seconds). Check the functions. Bolt it on....

If something does not work, consider your options. I have taken off many wheels (well, four or five) for clock spring replacement. This aint rocket science. It is about a three out of ten for difficulty. Supposedly you are supposed to disconnect the battery incase the airbag...blah blah blah. I never have.

Remove airbag - four Torx screws. Disconnect cable. Remove large bolt in the center of the steering wheel (I want to say I had to go buy a socket, your took kit may vary). Disconnect cables (I think two).

Reinstall in opposite order. It is VERY simple. While you are in there you may want to put in a new clock spring for good measure. That is the reason I have been into more than one Mercedes steering wheel.

Thank you! Do you recall the torque value for the large bolt ?

The differenced can be the space for the little motor that shapes the steering wheel when you drive over dashed line separating travel lanes. Active lane keep uses something else to keep car on lane but this works only on solid lane marker lines, at least my 2012 S550 works this way.

So if you have the lane keep option you need steering wheel with a space for that little shaker motor.

Update :

I replaced the steering wheel and transferred all the wiring from the old to the new one. I also installed Active Lane Assist as there was a space in the new one, and all functions are working well.

However, I’ve noticed a small gap between the airbag and the steering wheel, and the horn has become harder to press. It still works but requires extra force.

Any suggestion to fix this gap ( even though it is not noticeable, I want to have a perfect look )
