Get a Mercedes-specific scanner, such as the LAUNCH Creader Elite 2.0 BENZ, and read the codes. Can't really help you without knowing what failed.

That is why you need your own diagnostic capability and support! I have a BenzNinja Club membership and know that I will always have diagnostic support at my fingertips at no additional cost. $1000 diagnostic charge is 2X the Club membership. Did the dealership share the diagnostic report from XENTRY? Why the hell does it take a month and $1000 to figure out that you need a new controller, if that is really the problem?

Change AUX battery first before allowing the big job.

Have it done by someone else that the dealer that gave you the quote.

I wouldn't dump $4000 for a one-time glitch.

You have to educate yourself to spot robberies.
These cars are sensitive to poor voltage. They have many computers built to generate cryptic troubles.

Rule No1: gotta have decent voltage at all time.
Use a battery tender to maintain both MAIN (+ AUX).

Disconnect all batteries when car is not in use for 3 weeks or more.

Recap:
dealer shop want you to pay $1000 diagnostic fee...
Ask to see the detailed report.
Question how many hours it took to troubleshoot... 30mn.
