Loud noise on start up
Hi all,
I've got an e400 that has this loud noise (video attached below) when starting the car warm/cold.
What do you guys think could be causing the noise? Timing chain?
Car has 70,000km on it and its been maintained well.

That is very likely one or two bad VVT ( camshaft phaser/ADJUSTER ) . 70,000KM is very low mileage to have this.
My friend's M271.8 had almost as loud VVT issue as yours, but yours to date is the loudest one I have heard.
E400 too. But DO NOT follow his VVT loosening and tightening procedure !!!

M276.9 3.5 NA , cousin of M276.8 3.0 Turbo

from $500 to $2500
You can start replacing only the secondary chain tensioners ($100Ea), simple job.
Then if that's not enough, later replace 2x intake VVT's with related job : PCV + HPFP.
So this goes from a simple $500 job to easily $2500+
This issue is caused & worsened by limited oiling pressure.
Provide better oiling than stock conditions (0w40 every 15Km).
The secondary chains and guides are good to keep.
