Aftermarket Voltmeter Not Working

I never use car’s cigarette lighter so took it out and replaced it with a voltmeter which can also charge my phone. When I removed cigarette lighter, it was attached to 3 wires, a red, a brown and a thin grey wire. Voltmeter had 2 prongs, a positive and a negative. So, I assumed the red wire from car would plug into the red positive and the brown would go with the negative prong. I assumed the thin grey wire was for lighting the cigarette lighter, so I left it alone.

After I buttoned up everything, voltmeter didn’t power up, and thankfully no fuses got blown, that I could tell. I’m not sure why it’s not working, but is it possible that brown wire is positive and red is negative?.i could remove center console and check polarity but it was a pain in the azz, which I’d rather not do.

no outlet pwr

yes, the solid brown is used as GND.
Use a DVM to figure whats happening with your chassis.
Its a safe bet the related fuse got zapped.

That cigarette lighter fuse is located in the trunk #71, will have to check it by day.

I really like your MOD to read DC Voltage and supply smart phone charge.

What module is that your using ???
Ok found it on eBay $10 to 12Ea... nice!

Note this voltage source is a bit lower than what the main battery gets... not a problem.
👏

Why did you not simply use a voltmeter that plugs in the 12V socket?

I could have done that, but I like permanent fixtures

Replacing cigarette lighter’s fuse fixed the problem.
