Question Steering Squeek After Driving

Got a 2010 E350 Sedan recently, put some money into routine maintenance (fluids, filters brakes etc), but not been able to pinpoint an annoying, somewhat intermittent steering noise. It sounds like rubber on rubber and only manifests after the vehicle has been driven for extended time (like >20 miles/mins). I've seen people saying its the steering column, ive seen people say ball joints. Anyone got any recommendations before i point a mechanic at it again? Last time they took it in they said they lubed some rubber components but made no difference.

Other than this and a few interior rattles, the cars great and I hope to keep it to 100k+ miles (75k at the moment).

Vid of noise:

this sounds like the dry steering column bearing gone bad.

The MB specialist won't need directions to diagnose your column.

As for steering oil service while you're there. Check the seasoned high pressure hose fittings for leaks.

Thanks, what is the dry steering column bearing. Im not seeing that when i search.

The steering was serviced (fluid/reservoir change) and pipes inspected. They were good.

it's located right at the top of steering column, under the steering wheel.

Interesting, is it common on the W212?

MB builds the steering column steel ball bearing with plenty of attention to preset ownership experience.

What I can say... is once I lubed my dry column bearings, I noticed the difference: steering wheel feels lighter to steer. (**)

factory dry condition👏
dry factory lubed condition👏

Here is the related thread for ya... I was surprised by the dry bearings in my luxury German vehicle. What a setup!!

both bearing races after getting lubed with high-temp silicone
both bearing races after getting lubed with high-temp silicone

I have since bypassed the aggravations from the monkey tilt convenience... so we could fix something more interesting:
the laggy heavy hot factory setup.

**: I van write a chapter how MB steering wheel handling gets degraded by:
steering column dry top bearing
dry struts ball bearings races (2pcs)
weak ball joints at knuckles (4pcs)

these parts are amazingly cheap, only need TLC.

I’m now hoping this is ball joints and not the steering column needing to be taken apart. I feel an expensive repair on my hands if that’s the case

you know you can inspect these ball joints... or take a guess based on mileage and age.
Forward control arm with ball-joint is the second suspension part to wear out after stab-links ball-joints. Replace all 4pcs.

Hi All,

Turns out it was the struts, i suspect the top mount was the issue but needed to be replaced anyway due to some minor leaking. Silent now!
