My E350 wagon’s driver side head light started acting up yesterday. The light has changed to a very bright purple color. The light output is lower than normal. All the other lights remain the normal bright white color. Is this the bulb or the HID ballast? I’ve had several cars with HID headlights in the past, however I’ve never had one go bad or had to mess with them.

You can switch side to side then youll have the answer.
Install the known good bulb on the bad side then do not connect the questionable bulb.
The order of HID parts to grow old is.... :
1- the plasma bulb then
2- the HID ballast itself
