Coolant light but no overheating

Hello all,

Currently running a 2010 E250 CDI estate.

I have a strange issue where the coolant light will appear on the info display screen but the car will not over heat. This happens when sitting idle in traffic. The temperature gauge could be at 70°C or could be at 95°C. When it gets hot enough the fan will kick in and cool the car down so the car will not over heat.

When the car is moving the message does not come on the screen.

The only think I can think is that there is red or pink coolant in the engine and maybe I should flush this out and replace with blue but unsure if that will fix the issue.

Interested to hear any thoughts ! Thank you

Also looking to buy a diagnostics that works with Mercs as I have others too such as the launch if anyone has suggestions where to buy these.

Thanks all !

The display light you're referring to may be the low coolant level sensor in the expansion tank. The level of coolant in exp tank vary slightly with engine heat.

As for using RED coolant instead of YLW or BLU... you may need several rince procedures. Luckily the coolant circuit uses less than 2 Gallons. Radiator has a quarter-turn drain at the bottom.

Thank you for that, I did check the coolant level on a cold engine and confirmed it was full and currently still is.

From reading around is it possible the radiator fan is malfunctioning in some way ? I note it does activate high fan mode at high engine temperature but I don't hear or see it move in a low fan or medium fan mode.

Info on what symbols on the dash mean can be found in the Operators Manual.

If coolant were low it would probably say low coolant. Seems the symbol above may be associated with coolant temperatures.

Document what the coolant temperature shows on the dash next time the warning pops up.

During normal operating temps 80-115 c the system is designed to show a consistent temp of 90 c.

My temp gauge always hangs out at 90 c. If I saw it higher, other than after a cold start and the engine was warming up, I would be concerned.

Below is from W204 but should be the same for w212.
