Instrument Cluster Startup (Digital Display)
Every time I get inside my vehicle, all i see in the center message display is "do not forget key". Yesterday, oddly I went in and the gauge appeared in an animation and a picture of the E class came up and flashed its headlights. This was the first time I had seen this in 2 months of ownership. Anyone know what triggers it?

I think it (don't forget your key) happens if you don't fully close the driver's door when you get in. At least that's been my experience.

I too had the same experience except instead of an animated E Class, it shows the power band on the Tach rev all the way up and back down. Note: I have the "progressive" setting selected for the instrument panel. This is the modern, high-tech look where the Tach is directly in front of the driver with a digital speedometer in the center.
The car only did this one time. Otherwise, it displays the "don't forget your key" message upon entry and exit. Interesting.

Progressive has become my favorite display. Since the speedometer and tach are both in the middle you can use the sides for much more info. For example I se the right for the trip data and the left for the AMG info display. In essence the other 2 modes use the center for all the computer info. While the progressive uses the center for the main data (speed/revs) and the sides as two computer displays. Love it.

Why does MB need to remind us to not forget your key when you can't lock the car with the key inside? And why take your key out of your pocket if it's a keyless system?

What a mystery. I haven't seen it since I made this thread.
As for the "Forget key" message, it also annoys me that it shows a picture of the old mercedes key and not the new one...

When you choose progressive you choose the right side. After that is set the left side is everything that was in the middle of the other 2 modes, all the computer display options. Took me a while to figure that out!

I too use the progressive format. No real need to take up half the screen with a tach in a car with an automatic trans (which the other two options do).
And the progressive format frees up a lot of screen real estate for other goodies. However I am hard-pressed to find anything truly interesting to place in those two flanking positions.
Here are the choices:
Service - Withing this option you can choose from;
Service messages: There are none
Tire pressure: Like watching grass grow
Assyst Plus: Tells you time remaining for next svc appt. Yawn!
Coolant - Not cool! No action.
DriveAssist - Only choice here is Attention Assist which supposedly alerts you if you seem drowsy. Watching this is so boring that it puts you to sleep; only then is it interesting!
Trip - Shows your total and trip miles. Another snoozer.
Navigation - I keeps this on the left side of my other 12.3" screen so it is redundant.
Radio and Media - These appear on my other screen when in use.
Phone - This comes up when I hit the "Call" button on the steering wheel.
Time & Date - Sheesh. And why is "MONDAY" twice the side of the time? At least the time changes once per minute and I do look at it on occasion.
Eco - At least this info changes frequently as you drive. It's a mini video game encouraging you to conserve fuel.
Consumption - So much going on here that I have yet to decipher it all.
I wish there was something (two something actually - one for each side) more interesting (dynamic) to look at in each of the positions. Maybe a graphic of what other cars and objects around me are doing (Tesla has this) or scrolling news headlines or stock quotes. Something less dull!

I figured it out!!!
What you do is get in the car, and the instrument cluster shows the screen you were previously on, for me its the trip computer. Then, you wait in the car without turning anything on. Eventually, after 30 seconds or so, the entire digital screen goes black and shuts off. At this point, you can start the car by pushing the button and you will get the animation.

Unfortunately you CAN lock the car with the key inside. I did by accident, 2019 a238. Luckily my second key was 2 blocks away.

If it was a quirk they wouldn't have changed it on the new MBUX cars with the picture of the new key. Anyway, its not like I lose sleep over it, but I am a detailed person, and appreciate it when engineers go above and beyond to create details in things. For instance, I created a thread here where the trip odometer image on the E class has a mileage showing 213, and then 11-19-84 which is the date the first E class came out. Details matter in life.
