Air body control question

I can sometimes hear the compressor running for about 5 minutes when I shutdown the car. Everything seems normal with the function of the suspension and the ride height. Car does not settle at night, but does reduce the ride height by .75" when the car is locked. The height reduction is similar to what I've experienced in the past with my W212 so no concerns there. The pump stops after 5 minutes and does not restart while the car is at rest. No codes can be found by the dealer nor any leaks in the system. Still, I would not expect the pump to run after shutdown. Thoughts anyone?

Completely normal. My car does it almost every time I shut down the car. Another thing that can run while off is the oil pump. When there is a leak in the suspension the pump will run at odd times and, if bad enough, almost continously till the pump or battery croaks. Your dealer should know this its almost an airmatic signature.

Yep it's normal. My Jeep GC had air suspension and did this as well. It would level out the car after the engine was off for about the same 5 minutes you're experiencing. I haven't hung around my MB much after turning it off, but I'm guessing it's the same case.

davekarn, congrats on your new E300. I've always owned a Lexus but switching to Mercedes, so doing my research. I noticed you ordered the Acoustic Comfort Package as well as Air Body Control. Do I need both of these to achieve a smoother and quieter ride? (I was reading another post which seemed to imply that Air Body Control was all that's needed). Also, did you order the Luxury styling or Sport styling? I like the exterior look of the Sport styling but want the smooth, quiet ride --- hence the question. Thanks in advance.

Air body control is a definte plus, smooth or sporty at the flick of a button. The quiet package is more appropriate for cars using 20 in rims since the E is superbly quiet as it is.

The best feature of the Acoustic/Comfort package is the IR blocking laminated glass. It keeps the heat out without reducing vision especially at night as typical window tinting does. If you are in a warm or sunny climate this package is well worth the money.

Why are 20's noisier?

Larger wheels are noisier for a few reasons, all which are due to the tires themselves, first they tend to be wider, they use stickier summer compound, plus the short profile isolates less from tread noise. The newer designs are better than before but some still can be tractorlike!

The IR film weighs almost nothing. The additional sound insulation can't add more than a couple of pounds.

Sorry for the delay in responding, life's been busy!

While I don't have a non-acoustic comfort package to compare to, I must say I've been very impressed with how quiet the interior is. Where in previous vehicles, people talking to me from outside the vehicle w/windows up, I would hear them fairly well. With this car, I can barely hear anything. Air Body Control is fantastic and the ride has been great. Finally got out of the break-in period and used the Sport mode and it's a whole lot more fun/engaging to drive than Comfort mode. However, Comfot mode is in fact very comfortable. The streets around my work have cobblestone and with the Mercedes, what is a hellaciously bumpy ride normally, smooths everything out.

Whether I "needed" the Acoustic Comfort Package is hard to answer, but I'm happy that I went with it. Looking forward to the summer and seeing how well it blocks out the summer sun.

A car
I see I can't buy the Acoustic Comfort Package in Canada. What's up with that? Is it included or something?

The stock glass is also heat insulating although not IR, the difference in letting through heat between the two is minimal.
You cannot beat the tinted glass regarding this specific feature.

However the acoustic glass is laminated giving the noise damping abilities, this is much better than the stock glass, the downside is that you cannot choose tinting in combination with them.

In hot climates such as Florida IR blocking is a must - either through IR blocking window film or laminated glass. Window film is not allowed on the front windshield. In our heat window film lasts about 3 years before it begins to peel. Inside vehicle temperatures when parked for 30 minutes often climb to 130°F (54°) or greater when not protected from IR radiation. It is mid-Spring and our temperatures are already greater than 90°F (35°C) in the afternoon.

The car I have on order has The Sun Protection Package. Excluding blinds, the glass is tinted green. Would this be laminated glass and therefore quieter or is it simply green tint?

Laminated glass, IR film, 30% tint in the glass.

The tinted glass is not laminated.

The acoustic glass has two panes of glass "glued" together using a sound absorbing double ahesive film.

The acoustic package is not offered in Canada. So just tinted glass, too bad.

Vic that is exactly what laminated glass is! All windshields are laminated.
The difference is what the middle elastomeric layer is or if there another additional layer. Safety glass , on the other hand, is prestressed glass that shatters in small fragments. The 2 glass layers of the windshield (aka lamina) are made of safety glass as are all other windows but the other windows are not laminated. In the comfort package the front windows are laminated too. The heat rejection thing is simply a different goo holding the glass lamination together. I dont think the glass is any different or that it uses any special coatings. To make it sound insulating you simply make the goo thicker or the material is more acousticly "dead".

Windshields, yes, side windows, no

With acoustic glass all the windows are laminated, not just the windshield.
