Text Messages phone not supported

I have a 2017 C class that text messages work perfectly in. I just brought home a new 2018 E400 coupe. Phone is paired but car says phone does not support text messages.
Any thoughts on what the problem could be?
Thanks!

I have a Google pixel and have to constantly deauthorize and reconnect bluetooth. Sometimes it gives the "text messages not supported". MB tech thinks its a pixel issue. I seem to be doing this everyday. Very annoying.

I believe with the iPhone, you can receive texts but you cannot respond to them

Connect the iPhone via CarPlay and Siri will read text messages to you and you can dictate a reply or a new message.

I agree that is will only read texts, not reply. But it is not receiving the text. Just have message that says no texts available.

I thought pf the car play option but don't want to have to connect to a cable every time I get in the car. I guess I am lazy. LOL

iPhone 6. I am not sure why it started working. I had the phoone paired with bluetooth. No text functionality. Turned the the "Notifications" setting on in the phone's bluetooth profile for the E400 and then it showed text messages functioning but would not receive any texts that I sent from myself to myself. Next I pressed the voice control button and said send text message to........and it responded confirming the name and asking what I wanted to say. I responded with a full sentence. It repeated back to me perfectly. It then sent the text perfectly. Later I had my fiancee who was in the car with me send me a text. Again it did not show up. I sent another text to her using the voice feature again. She sent a reply text and then both the first and second text from her showed up on the command display and were able to read visually as well as readt out loud by the car.
Used it again today when she was not in the car and everything worked perfectly both directions.

Are you sure you got it to work via the car's phone system and not via carplay?
Because it seems the iphone won't allow any external control of the phone (other than carplay)

2017 E sedan could receive and read incoming texts. 2018 E coupe should, as well.

I can only suggest one thing. When you pair a phone it seems to take about 15 to 30 seconds to get the message on the phone about wanting to gain access to receiving and sending (or something like that). Maybe you left your bluetooth screen too soon?

"show notifications" -
it's on on my phone, but can not dictate any messages.
(only read on screen and have them read to me)
can also not call the person who sent text directly from that text (had same problem in my w212)

Yes it is not Carplay. Carplay works when phone is connected with a cable and shows the Carplay screen. What is working is with the phone connected by bluetooth and is the regular Mercedes display.

After finding out it works in my E400, I tried it in my 2017 C300 Cabriolet. It worked there the first time I tried it. Had not realized until now that the C300 had the feature.

it's driving me nuts, but can not get it to work, no matter how often I re-pair phone.
I connected by letting car find phone...
then connected by letting the phone find car...
switched on notifications...
even switched mobile data off and on as suggested in the online manual
Nada!

I wish I had a suggestion or solution for you. My first efforts to see if it was working was by sending a text to myself. That did not work. Only when someone else sent me a text did it start working.

I do have to hold down the speach button on the steering wheel for a couple of seconds to activate the dictation function. It does not happen immediately.

now all becomes clear lol

you are activating siri on the phone to dictate, while I was talking about dictating through the command system

but thanks for the tip; cos was not aware that I could activate siri in this way.

Use the menu to manually send a text message. You will need to accept a user agreement. After that, you can send texts via voice control. On my car, I used the phone menu, went to text messages, and selected Write New Text Message.

Wow this works. I just learned about this.
To answer and confirm some questions you cannot send text messages through the comand. You can hold the voice button on the steering wheel and this activates siri on the iphone. Or you can use apple car play to read and send and reply to text messages.

But you can get notifications in your comand screen that a new text message has been received and the comand can display the message and the sender and read it outloud. In the iPhone under MB Bluetooth notifications need to be turned on.
