Factory Order Deposit

So I was planning on ordering a custom E300 from one of the newer dealerships that just opened in Calgary and we agreed on the pricing (around 80000 with almost all the packages) and was willing to buy it until the salesman said that I would have to place a 10% non-refundable security deposit just for them to place the order in the system. From other people's experiences, how much did you have to place for a custom factory order? I thought it was absurdly high since we factory ordered an X5 just 2 years ago which cost more than this car did and we only had to place a 1000 dollar deposit. Also, is it true that they can't give a discount on factory ordered cars? I feel like they are just being dishonest and I am thinking of moving on and ordering with another Mercedes dealer I previously have ordered from.

I'm in the US. I've never paid a non-refundable deposit on a factory order. Of my last 3 factory orders, I rejected 2 of them when the vehicle arrived. When purchasing something site unseen it make no sense to make any kind of non-refundable deposit. Find a different dealer!

If they are not giving you a discount, move on to another MB dealer. As far as deposit goes, $2,500.00 is what my dealer expects. I've never seen 10% before.

As far as refunding the money, if the dealer brings in a specialty car that is out of the ordinary, you should expect the deposit to be non refundable. If your car is 80K, you are in E400 territory. By the way, when you compare the standard equipment in the E400, it's not a big jump in price between the loaded E300 and the same equipment in the E400. Take my word for it, you will prefer the E400 especially in mountain country.

Just curious. Why would you reject something that you ordered unless it arrived damaged?

I don't know about Canadian law, but here if you don't have a written contract you can back out and get you money back. the first dealer I went to said that Sh it to me. they also said no discounts on ordered cars. they gave me my 5k back when I fired them. I am now with a new dealer and gave 5k deposit again. we talked I can get it back.

We ordered $20,000 in options on our E300 with zero down. I put $1000 down but they never cashed the check and when I asked them they said it didn't matter to them if it came in and I didn't want it. Each dealer will have different policies, I would search around.

GLC 300 4matic
I ordered my 2018 Glc 300 4matic and made a $5000 dollar non refundable deposit unless it was damaged. I also paid cash for my Glc not a lease. My custom order was also 2 months late sitting at the VPC and I could have backed out of the deal as well. I did not back out because I ordered what I wanted and it took months to build and delivered. I live north of Toronto, I also got a small discount on said custom order. I believe Mercedes-Benz Benz deals differently in different countries and its dealerships as well.

2018 E43 AMG
From Australia so probably not a good guide for Canada/USA. We ordered a 2018 E43 to be built on the 21st January 2018. Paid $5,000AU deposit and also got $10,000AU discount from the Dealer. The Australian standard configuration has pretty much all packages included except for the 3 x zone A/C which we added and the upgrade to the sound system & has a RRP of $170k AU. This is our first Mercedes after 10 years of 5 Series Beamers (all factory ordered).

Slightly OT but all our BMW's had soft close doors & wanted the same for the E43 but was told there was no option available. I notice ua549 has soft close doors in his signature description. Is this a standard option in the US?

There are several reasons I rejected 2 special orders in the last 3 years.

I ordered a '15 E400. It came in with a factory substituted entertainment system that did not have surround sound ($900 sticker credit) in lieu of the standard system.

I ordered a '16 GLE 450 Coupe sight unseen before pricing was set. I was told the price would be competitive with a similar BMW 6 series. It came in at $85k instead of the expected $73. In addition it was so high off the ground that my 5'6" wife was unable to mount the vehicle without a ladder.

Find a different dealer. You should not be putting that much in non refundable deposit.
And you should get a discount since you're ordering almost all the options and they'll make more money.

if you ordered the 15, how did it come in with something different than what you ordered? I wouldn’t order anything unless I knew what the price was. If the dealer was stupid enough to let you do that and get a 100% refund if not happy, then great for you.

Many times I order vehicles before they are priced or the DOG is released as I did with the 2018 E300 that I ordered. There was evidently a supply issue with the '15 E400 entertainment system. The factory put in the one that was standard in the E350 and issued a credit. That was not acceptable to me. All of the sales contracts I enter into have a 100% refund clause for any reason prior to my final acceptance. That perk is one of the benefits of using the same dealer for over 40 years. The dealer is not stupid! It is called great customer service.

2018 E300 4Matic.
$500 Fully Refundable.

I'm in Canada. When I ordered a 2017 E300, I gave a $500 fully refundable deposit.

The car arrived, and I had regrets about options I hadn't ordered.

They ordered me a 2018 E300 and finally applied my $500 deposit whnen I received the car.

Thanks for the input guys! I’m just gonna go back to the dealership that’s already established in Calgary and with whom I’ve purchased cars from before. I emailed them already and they only require a 900 dollar refundable deposit to factory order the car. I’ll probably be placing the order in the next few weeks or I might just wait it out for 3 more months and order a 2019 E400 or E43 AMG instead since the X5 lease is coming to an end in October.

Awesome choice to get an E43, but a word of caution. If you are going to custom order an E43, don't wait too long. They can take quite a while to arrive. Hopefully they have resolved the issues by now, but a few of us on this forum had to wait close to 10 months for our 43's to arrive.

2018 E-300
I took custom delivery of an E-300. It was from a dealer I never used in the past. I didn't have to come in and sign anything or put down a deposit. I did go in just to go over the build in detail. I am in the U.S.A. I wonder if it is a country thing?
