Active Parking Assist
This was included in a package on my wife's car, but we haven't tried it out yet since we rarely parallel park. Those of you who have it, is it useful?

My opinion is “it depends”.
If you’re good at parallel parking you probably don’t need it.
It’s scary at first because you don’t necessarily trust the car to avoid scraping another car. Takes some getting used to.
In a city where you’re trying to parallel park with traffic behind you, it presents additional issues because it’s relatively slow and cars can get behind you during the process.
If you’re not good at parallel parking and cars are not approaching from behind it’s probably helpful.
For me, it’s a gadget which I don’t use.

I've tried it a few times and don't particularly like it. It's very slow, a problem on a busy street. It also "looks" for spaces that are much larger than the car, bypassing spots I would choose. And as Tiburonsteve points out, it goes well past the spot while it does its assessment, allowing other cars to pull in behind you, intentionally or otherwise blocking your access to the spot. Like so many of the automated systems now being offered by car manufactures, it sorta works but in reality isn't ready for prime time quite yet.

I've never used it. Parallel parking is not difficult for me though I seldom have the need to park that way. That said, the cameras are great for entering/leaving angled parking in congested areas where visibility is null.

I´ve used it most to show of for my kids or scare my wife... Or pedestrians or other drivers...
I find it useful when looking for a spot that is big enough when I´m a bit stressed and looking for a parallel spot.

it only works in large spaces, so it's only handy If you are terrible at parallel parking
as soon as you have less than 30cm in front and rear it doesn't work anymore.. yet an experienced driver could then still park it him/her-self.
in the usa i imagine it to be completely useless, cos all the parking spaces there are designed for trucks...:-)

First al all, if it is not just for parallpa parking. It is also for vertical parking.
On top of that, not sure about the 30 cm from each side. It once entered a parallel parking with at least 4 park fixes. Meaning, it had to go back and forth 4 times to get in or out after it completed to get in

I've had my car about 10 weeks now, and have yet to get it to work. First it needs to identify the spot, which it almost never does. I'd say at most 10% of usable spaces get spotted, and that might be generous. You need to drive completely past the spot, very slowly (because you'll need to slam on the brakes to avoid it running off the screen otherwise), and then there's inevitably someone behind you so you can't back up. I'd say there was something wrong with my car, but when I test drove one at the dealer, it wouldn't find a spot either.
My attempts have been mostly at perpendicular parking ,since I don't need to parallel park often. I give it the old college try most every time I enter a parking lot, just for the fun of seeing it work once, just once! Even though I would probably then move to a nice end space so I have room to open my giant coupe door.
