iPhone and NFC
I put my iPhone on the NFC pad in my E400. The phone changed to Apple Pay and was not charging. I am trying to figure out why the phone open the Apple Pay app?
Thanks for any thoughts.

I located an answer on the Apple support page. Apple only supports NFC for Apple Pay!

The charging is not using NFC, charging is done with QI. iPhone 8 and later supports Qi.

What is Qi and is that something in the E400? My car has a spot for the NFC and I can always charge with one of the USB connections.

Qi is an interface standard developed by the Wireless Power Consortium for inductive electrical power transfer over distances of up to 4 cm (1.6 inches). The Qi system comprises a power transmission pad and a compatible receiver in a portable device. To use the system, the mobile device is placed on top of the power transmission pad, which charges it via resonant inductive coupling.
Newer smart phones support QI charging. My Galaxy S6 from 2015 supports it. If you phone supports QI charging you can simply lay your phone on the console tray and it will charge.

Well, I own an Android so it isn't a problem for me, and I haven't had an iPhone for a while. But I was curious why this might happen. It seems this isn't a rare problem for iPhones in general, as there is a lot about it on the internet.
From what I saw, you can't disable the chip. You can set it up so a card isn't linked to it, but it seems the NFC activation can't be overridden. Apple knows best, after all.

I don't and won't ever own any Apple product. But here is what my daughter said she did to eliminate Apple Pay.
Go to Settings, then Notifications, scroll down and tap on Wallet. Do not close Allow Notifications. Close everything else first. Scroll down to the bottom of Wallet Options, turn off Show Previews, then move up to Alert style when unlocked and choose None. Continue up turning off Show On Lock Screen, Badge App Icon & Show In Notification Center. Then after everything is turned off, turn off Allow Notifications at the top.

::snort:: My "newer" Note 4 from 2014 supports it.

Other than Apple Pay, does the iPhone support any other NFC functionality? I'm suspecting they don't, which is why Apple Pay pops up anytime the phone's near an NFC tag.

The most you can do with COMMAND is de-authorize the phone. NFC functions are controlled by the phone.

Edit - There is a setting on the Communications menu to turn off NFC.

Where did you find the QI charge point? Is it in the NFC space or the center arm rest?

The QI charging pad is in the forward console, not under the armrest. NFC is in the forward console lid.
